the roundup

my parents were in town two weeks ago. it was a super short visit and we did a lot so it flew by. we had some good meals at pinnochio in north beach, fellini in berkeley, mifune in japantown (they stayed at the kabuki hotel in japantown) and most notably, at millennium! we opted for the farmer's market prix fixe menu, which was entitled "dirt and independence."

1st course: grilled fig salad: macadamia nut "cheese," arugula, basil, fig balsamic

2nd course: white bean and sage stuffed squash blossom: creamed corn, chipotle oil

3rd course: mom, dad and i had the cumin scented fresh corn tamale: porcini mushroom and new mexican chili pozole rojo with pinquito beans, roasted carrot, potato and lambs quarter greens, marinated radish, jicama and avocado salsa, cilantro crema.

mike had the blackberry bbq'ed smoked tempeh: summer truffle mac and cheese gratin, seared green beans, cucumber pickle.

dessert: strawberry ice cream sandwich: chocolate-zucchini cookies, blueberry compote.

it was so delicious, although i wasn't all that excited about the tamale. the tamale itself was actually great but the pozole was really boring. i ate a lot of mike's mac and cheese and beans, and almost all of his dessert. it was painful getting back on the bus to go home i was so full!

last weekend we took a short trip to LA. we drove down friday night and it was boiling hot. my feet were super swollen when we arrived around midnight. there was traffic so it took us about 8 hours, when it usually takes no more than 6.5. ugh! the valley is just such an unpleasant place to be in the summer. we did get to have lunch with michael and rafia and we went ON A BOAT, then mike dropped me off to have dinner at allison's. we also got a bunch of baby stuff from her, and a ton of maternity clothes, which is awesome. sunday we had lunch with taylor and then drove back up to SF in that nasty heat. i will never go to LA in july again!

my parents sent out the invitations to our baby shower next month. they are actually pretty cute. i was worried because the original draft had a photo of me on the front, holding my belly, and my dad superimposed disney animals all around it with photoshop. not quite the image i had in mind. but it turned out nice so we'll be there in a month. i think the registries are mostly finalized. i guess we'll see!

my belly is really round now and there is no hiding it. the little guy is really low so i don't know what the rest of the belly is. probably cookies.
