Dr. Rush followed Lt. James out of the wormhole. The planet’s twin moons bathed them in incandescent silver light. It would’ve been beautiful if there had been time to reflect upon it. A mile ahead, the gigantic waves crashed onto the light gray sand - their strength greatly increased by the strong lunar system. High tide was coming.
“Damn it,” Rush cursed under his breath. He turned to James, talking loudly over the wind. “This isn’t going as fast as I expected.”
The look on James’ face betrayed that she was fighting her emotion. She lost that fight and spoke up candidly.
“I think you’re the only other person who wants to find them as badly as I do.”
Rush said nothing. He simply gazed ahead at the angry waves.
“You care about her, don’t you?” she pressed. “You can fool the others, you can fool her, and you can fool yourself - but you don’t fool me. I can see it in your eyes. You want to save her just like I want to save him.”
Rush still said nothing, but a flicker in his eyes indicated that he was shocked by her revelation.
“That’s why I have faith in you. You’ll find her because you have to.”
She could barely hear him over the roaring wind as he said, “I wish I had the faith you do, lieutenant.”
He dialed the gate.
