Oof. Today went from zero to crazy in a very unexpected way. I noticed the left leg of my glasses had been loose for some time, so I stopped into LensCrafters on the way home from work to get a small adjustment. I came home, went to dinner with Meghan, and was settling in for the evening when, pop, the left leg snaps off my glasses. It looked like something fixable, so I put my sunglasses on and drove myself back over to the mall to see what they could do (can I just reiterate how much prescription sunglasses were the best idea I ever had?! I have no backup pair of glasses because this was the pair I bought when the last ones broke the exact same way two years ago). Turns out, a whole lot of nothing. The nice LensCrafters lady found a small crack in the frame that was, ironically enough, exacerbated by the adjustment earlier. In short, they were already on their way to breaking, and getting them adjusted was the straw that broke the camel's back. Anyway, they couldn't make me new pair because my prescription was over two years old, so I went over to the doctor's office side where I got my last exam to see if they could squeeze me in tonight. They couldn't, but let me know if I came back first thing tomorrow morning, they could take me as a walk-in within an hour or so. Seeing as how I am virtually BLIND without my glasses, I really had no other option. So I let work know I'd be late tomorrow and that I'd be there as soon as I could, then went home.
On a whim, I decided to take the downtime to see if the doctor in the mall would even take my Target insurance, and it turns out she does not. Time to weigh my options. After going to my insurance provider's site and doing some research, I found that the Hoosier Eye Doctor in Bloomington not only took my insurance, but was also open from 9am-9pm every day. At this point it was only about 7:30, so I figured I'd call and make an appointment or ask about walking in tomorrow...on the off-chance they could get me in, I'd get an eye appointment for $10 with my co-pay and shave a little time off getting some glasses tomorrow. They told me they were all booked up tomorrow, but actually had time to get me in for an exam tonight! So I went over and I can't even begin to tell you how good of an idea that was!!!! First and foremost, the doctor and his staff were all really nice and very accommodating. He had my exam done in probably 20 minutes with almost no wait. I made the decision to go back to wearing contacts (maybe not 24/7 but at least wanting the option) and he not only got me a trial pair to last me the next week until my glasses come, but he also had one of his assistant's patch my current glasses so I can still wear them in small doses when I'm not wearing the contacts. I was so pleased with their service and their selection/discounts that I ended up just ordering my new glasses from them, even though I was hesitant about them taking a week or so to come in.
This is what they look like, only they're in a caramel brown tortoise shell. They're Coach, but I got them for 50% so they were actually a little cheaper than most of the less expensive designer brands. I'll post pics as soon as I get them. :) And so far I like the contacts but it'll probably take a few days to get used to wearing them again. I think it's been like, 8 or 9 years since I've even had contacts. Haha. But, now that I'll have both, I should have less wear and tear on my new pair of glasses, and I'll have backups in case I have problems with one or the other. And, it'll be nice for situations like amusement parks or vacation and other places where I miss having the option of contacts.
So, all in all, I can't say enough good things about the Hoosier Eye Doctor and his staff. They really went out of their way to help me out in an emergency and I feel like this is a place I'd feel comfortable doing business with again. Even though I definitely wasn't planning on spending the money on something like this just now, I'm glad I did, because I'm already pleased with my choice. I get to go back in a week for a follow-up with the contacts, and my glasses should be ready a couple days after that. Hooray! Though I'm bummed I can now be at work on time tomorrow, it is a relief to know that everything is taken care of and I can have a "normal" day.
Anyway, on that note, I'm off to get some ice cream and then I think it's time to take out the new contacts and hit the sack! :)
