I'm not diabetic myself, but since no one else responded, I wanted to say that as long as you're taking care of your blood sugar levels and the HbA1c is good (might discuss with your endocrinologist if the number aimed at is the same or lower), you're good to try and conceive. If you're on insulin anyway, the silver lining is that, since you're probably be testing your bsl regularly, you don't have to fear gestational diabetes since you can, if levels change, just adjust your already implemented treatment. However, every pregnancy in a diabetes patient is automatically classified as high risk and it can occasionally be more difficult to keep the optimal treatment, so you should definitely have a close relationship to your doctor's office in addition to the midwife. After getting pregnant, up to week 20 your body will likely need less insulin, after that it's the opposite due to the hormonal balance ( ... )

I was originally with a midwife but after failing the glucose test, I was immediately referred to an OB... the midwife can be present for your delivery, however, you still have to see the OB for your appointments and I was referred to an endo as well (that's how it works in Canada). The endo put me on insulin right away. I didn't have any complications, smooth pregnancy, labour and delivery. That being said, there were a lot of additional appointments due to the diabetes and my OB would not allow me to go past 40 weeks and so I had to agree to an induction. They put me in the "high risk" wing of the hospital and I had very frequent checkups.
A year after giving birth my blood sugar remained elevated and I was officially diagnosed as a Type 2 diabetic. We just found out we are expecting baby #2 so I'm thinking I'll receive the same treatment this time around.
Let me know if you have any other questions...
Are you Type 1 or Type 2?

I know i'm late to the party but my hba1c was 7.1 when getting pregnant. My doctor realized right away though that the metformin wasn't cutting it so I was put on insulin by week 5. (i saw my ob as soon as my pregnancy test said positive at 3w6d) A week of testing frequently showed need for insulin. It was fine. I had dr. appt every 2 weeks the entire pregnancy except 30w+ had to visit weekly, and 32w+ twice weekly for NST monitoring and also amniotic fluid level checks ( ... )
