Okay, first of all, thank you so much for all the speedy replies and encouragement. I really really appreciate it.
Secondly, we saw the lactation consultant today at the hospital. I have to say - Allen Presbyterian Hospital in Allen, TX is absolutely amazing and if anyone is in this area, I'd definitely consider delivering here. She was so kind and helpful. She even took a look at my breast pump and figured out why one side was suctioning harder than the other. Turns out - quick and easy fix was a nipple shield. He latched immediately. She stayed and supervised me feeding, checked his mouth/latch, fixed how I was holding him, and helped me transition him successfully from one breast to the other. She also answered my barrage of questions. She weighed him and he'd gained 4 oz. in 2 days (some people asked about this in the comments - the hospital doesn't even let babies go home if they've lost more than 10% of their body weight, so that was a big deal apparently).
I've now fed him several times since we've been home without a single issue.
Third: Okay, he had jaundice. It had gone down twice when tested in the hospital and he was released. However, today when they did the test, the LC called me back to let me know that his levels were back up. Not severely so, she said, but they were elevated and the pediatrician wanted to see us ASAP. I'm wondering, has this happened to anyone? What did they do? I'm afraid he's going to suggest more supplementing to flush out his system, but he's been eating a TON and I don't feel that supplementing him is even going to make a difference, especially if he's already full.
Also, for those of you with jaundiced babies, how long does the lethargy last? He's been doing nothing but eating and sleeping. There's literally not more than a half hour or so a day that he's actually awake and not eating. He eats and falls asleep, wakes up, eats some more, and will usually stay awake during this feeding, but then he goes right back to sleep. He also sleeps deeply between each feeding and I've had to wake him every. single. time to eat, he's never awoken on his own. I know that the jaundice causes this, but I'm just wondering if it lingers or if it resolves when the jaundice resolves.
Thanks again for fielding my frantic questions.
