Hi everyone,
Just got back from a big doctor appointment a few hours ago and am having some pregnancy complications. It's really long, mostly since they told us a lot of stuff and it's still all swimming around in my head, and I'm hoping to get some support here, or experiences if you guys have been through this, etc...I'm 26w3d.
(
Brain ventricles, amniocentesis, waiting )
when they did our anatomy ultrasound they couldn't find my baby's nasal bone. It took three techs, a high risk doctor (also doing the scan), and ELEVEN ultrasounds to finally locate it. They had to switch me to a high def machine for the last couple. What we were told is that lack of nasal bone = 99.5% chance of Down Syndrome. We were highly recommended an amnio as well, but we declined until they could make a good risk assessment. When they concluded (a week later) that his nasal bone is hypoplastic and not absent, they reduced the risk from 99.5% to 50%. When they finally assessed total risk, they gave us 1/5000 chance of a DS baby.. So as you can see, it dropped from almost 100% to virtually nothing, through a couple tests and some calculations.
In the end, it wasn't worth it to me to do the amnio regardless. I wouldn't fix DS if he has it, so I figured it was pointless. I'm not sure how it works in your situation, because of potential concern of infection = could doing an amnio tell you whether the baby needs treatment? Complication risks for amnios are very very low, so I wouldn't worry about that.
