Minions will notice a pattern of American-Sues over the next few days, but that the posting started on the sixth when the capital riot occurred. My reason for this, because a few days have passed, isn’t to protest for either political side. The actual reason comes down to the fact American-Sues often highlight the negative traits of us Americans. Yes, the fourth Pottersues is from the good old United States where the riot took place. Do the writers intend for these traits to show up? No, but they do.
I’m not as strong at witty sarcasm as the first and third Pottersues were, though I do try when I can. Chances are they would have come up with something witty and sarcastic to say that da that said, “look at the/us silly Americans”. (Given one of the Pottersues excitement over a Canadian Sue, not all of us are from America. This is my way of saying, “look at us silly Americans”, but without actually bringing up the politics which were going on that day, particularly since those days’ events were traumatic for a lot of people worldwide, yet I also felt everyone needed something.
In other news, I’m actually pleased to announce that the writer who quickly discovered their story after it was featured - like the day after, made a
really awesome attempt at fixing their story. Only one chapter is up, but there is definite improvements. Also, in regards to what I thought was the writer discovering a
couple of
their stories were featured, we’ve the unusual case where said writer whose gained a following with not only their fanfic, but their original fiction. They’re actually quite fine with having been featured.
Title:
A Melody Softly Soaring Perpetrator:
AccioAmare Sue-O-Meter: Good
Cover/Banner Art: None. Believe it or not, this is apparently the first story the writer has posted. Checks actual account creation date. It’s back in 2012, so there is a chance there were earlier stories, but some people don’t start writing and posting when they join.
Summary: “Emily Newport is a No-Maj born American witch who comes to Hogwarts to help with the rebuilding after the Battle. She is a former foster child and is wary of new relationships, but when she meets Charlie Weasley things start to change. Charlie isn't looking to date anyone; he'd prefer to get back to Romania to study dragons. But then he meets Emily...”
Full Name: Emily Newport
Sueworts House(s): Going into this, I am/was expecting a non-Sue example of an American OC that could fall under the good or okay rating. She still needs to be sorted, so going off the summary, I’d say Tootsie Tramp because one of her purposes is romance and Sparklypoo because she’s able to turn Charlie’s head, but if I’m right, said OC is actually going to be examples of how a writer can use traits normally associated with said houses in a manner that is good writing. Of course, this is also from the looks of it the writer’s first story, so I’m going into this with the possibility of being proved wrong.
Species: She’s not a Mary Sue, but instead an example of how to write an American-Sue well.
Hair: She has light-red hair. (I just imagined Draco popping up and saying she must be a Wesley because of this.)
Eyes: Sadly, this has not been described yet.
Markings: There is nothing specific that I picked up on.
Poessessions: She prefers No-Maj clothing and Charlie is falling for her, but those aren’t things that make her a Sue, do they?
Connection to Canon: Emily is actually very similar to Charlie, but not in the “I’m a copy of you” way like the Sue who was being paired with Sirius the other day was. By being similar to Charlie, I mean their love of their work taking precedence over romantic relationships. The first chapter opens up with Emily being asked to come because she works with research into restorative magic. This actually gives her reason for being in the plot that isn’t *gasp* forced, but she’ll have a role. Chapter two starts off with Charlie being home. He’s far from thrilled but having to bury his brother Fred doesn’t help. He also has to deal with Molly wanting him home rather than heading back to Romania, which, while I understand where Molly is coming from, isn’t okay. This said, he’s fine with helping with the restoration project. He runs into Harry sneaking out of Ginny’s room, which makes him think of Fred who would have teased Harry. At first, George isn’t covered as it he is forgotten, but then he is mentioned towards the end and that part focuses on him specifically, treating him and Fred as two different people. Emily arrives in chapter three and is greeted by McGonagall. She has some self-doubts, which makes sense since restoring Hogwarts is a big deal and we’d rather not have a female Lockhart running about. She makes sure they practice on smaller objects first. She’s of course “heard” about Harry and his friends, which makes sense since the events would be news for the entire world. (Okay, that sounds a bit ironic given why I’m posting American-Sues over the next few days.) She hits it off with Hermione Of the ones she’s heard about in the reports, Charlie is the enigma. (You know, that makes him sound more of a “Stu” than she could ever be a “Sue”. Chapter four is Bill teaching his brother Charlie about Emily in the usual Weasley fashion. His response. “I don’t know why you’re so obsessed with me getting together with this girl. She seems nice enough though…”. They find a tapestry that a standard fixing spell won’t work on and there is talk of Molly’s skills with the sewing needle. Charlie is starting to take an interest in her, and she is noticing Charlie. Is it a bit fast? Well, Emily is quite passionate about her work and sharing what she does with others and I think that’s what’s drawing him to her in this story.
Origin: Just from the summary alone, we’ve a witch from America coming for a logical reason for once, but the summary also addresses the fact Charlie Wesley is infatuated with dragons. Of course, her being the one to turn his eye might backfire as well.
Special Abilities: Nothing specific beyond getting into a relationship with Charlie, which we all know doesn’t make a character be a Mary Sue. Well, there is the fact she’s pioneered the field of restorative magic, but given the fact there has really from our knowledge never been the need to restore something magical which is as huge as Hogwarts, it still makes sense. It doesn’t always mean being the first person to create the field, but can be someone who helps move the field forward into new territories.
Notes: When I saw the summary for today’s Sue my thoughts were instantly, “am I actually going to be able to feature a story which really isn’t a Sue, but is something that gets the Okay or even Good ratings and serves of an example of how to write a character to American?” Given the reason I’m looking for American-Sues right now, my thoughts were, “that would actually be a delightful surprise.”
I quickly discovered that I was right, but I’d written the note for today before even finding today’s Sue, or I should say “not-a-Sue”. As such, while I am using the "Relationship Sue" and "Copycat Sue" tags, they're being used so if someone were to search those tags they'd have examples of what to do.
Sample:
She hadn't needed to talk to people about anything other than work back at MACUSA. Her work there was considered quite essential, but not many had the desire to join her. Magical restoration was a new field of study, and everyone seemed to be already pigeonholed into their designated areas. Emily couldn't fathom this - one of the joys of magical restoration was the exposure to so many different subjects. Her research combined the use of transfiguration, charms, and arithmancy, all in the pursuit of restoring magical artifacts that had been destroyed by time or dark magic. She had had a few students who would now take over the department, and they had worked well together. But they were not friends.
Perhaps it was her obsession with her work that made friendships difficult. After all, magical artifacts didn't bring personal problems to the work table and were quite preferable to people. She wondered if Hogwarts would be any different. At least McGonagall seemed interested in Emily's work, and it seemed as if the Restoration Task Force would be willing students. After all, it was their school, their national heritage, that had been threatened with destruction. They would likely be very eager to do the work correctly. Emily was starting to feel hopeful about this new job, even though she still couldn't shake the sense that this was the beginning of something big.
