A White Day Ball where vampires and humans get to mingle, Fuji mused over that thought as he decided on the white v-neck sweater and velvety navy blue pants which his sister bought for him last Christmas. He would have skipped it entirely considering that tonight was one of the best opportunities he could ever wished for to take a few pictures of the school after curfew but the condition set by Saeki had thrown a spanner into his plans. Although slightly inconvenienced, he couldn’t help but be amused as it was just so like Saeki to take such precautions. Pausing momentarily to look at his new cell phone with pretty powerful camera features, he came to a quick conclusion as to what would just be the right touch of provocation to keep Saeki on the edge during the ball.
Having decided on his plans for the night which would allow him ample time to complete what he wanted to do but still kept to the rules, Fuji hummed a soft tune as he wandered out for an early start to the evening.
The toothbrush clinked back into its glass and Eiji grinned at his reflection in the mirror, checking to make sure his hair was in place and not too windswept looking or anything. Satisfied with that, and dressed as formally as he could hope to manage in a white dress shirt and black silk pants(that he'd gotten from the shop instead of the leather ones his grandmother had bought him), he headed out of his room, sliding down the bannister to the foyer and stepping out into the chill evening. It's kinda cold, nya, I should've taken a coat or something along, he frowned, before realising it would be much warmer at the ball, plus there'd be food to distract him.
He had no intention of dancing, of course, no matter what anyone said. Besides, there'd be humans at the ball, and this was the perfect chance to find out more about them. All in all, he thought, folding his arms behind his head and gazing skywards at the stars that had begun to appear, it would be a fun day.
Making his way to put his plans in motion, Fuji savored the peace and quiet that currently surrounded the school grounds. He supposed that everyone must still be preparing since this seemed to be a major event for the students judging by the reactions on the journals. He never really did embrace the idea of having an online journal, preferring paper and pen but couldn’t deny that it was definitely a good source of information.
Spotting someone from afar, he walked silently towards the other with a knowing smile as his innate artist admired the view in front of him, dark vibrant red hair contrasting nicely with the white dress shirt and black silk pants in a laidback pose, it couldn’t have been anyone but Kikumaru Eiji, one of the vampires from the dusk dorm who wears his heart on his sleeve.
“Eiji-kun,” Fuji called out softly, not wanting to startle the other too much as his camera went click.
Eiji spun on his heel in surprise, eyes widening almost comically when assaulted by a sudden camera flash. Blinking several times to get his vision back, he grinned at who he identified to be Fuji…er…what was his last name…ah, Syuusuke!- from the Dawn dorm. The young vampire realised he must have been very distracted to not have noticed the human approach. Looking at him in the semi-darkness, Eiji couldn’t help but think that Fuji could pass off for a vampire himself if he wanted to (well, not by scent of course): there was that strange mysteriousness about him.
“Evening!” he greeted, then pouted at the camera phone in the boy’s hand. “Mou, you should’ve warned me if you were gonna take a picture nya! What if it turns out funny looking?”
“It didn’t, you are a natural at posing.” Fuji replied with a beatific smile as he flipped his phone closed, having saved the picture by pressing a single button at the side. “Although, I am a little surprised that you bare your fangs so easily when startled. Just like a cat with sharp claws.” He mused aloud but not loud enough for anyone else to hear except Eiji as he walked past to continue on his way, slipping the phone back into his pocket.
Eiji felt himself blush and self-consciously raised a hand to his teeth; his siblings had teased him to no end about the same thing Fuji had mentioned (except they usually added something to the effect of 'go find a mouse to chase' or attempt to dunk him in the family pool to a rendition of ding dong bell). Shaking off the moment of reminiscing, he forced the colour away from his cheeks, hurrying a bit to fall into stride beside Fuji.
"Ne, Fuji, have you been to a lot of balls before this one?" he asked, curious to learn more about the human boy.
“A few,” Fuji replied vaguely in amusement as he smoothly hid a laugh by clearing his throat. Perhaps, Eiji did not realize but Fuji had taken another picture of him blushing when the other was reminiscing. He was glad that it was still not so dark out yet that he couldn’t capture a decent picture without flash. “What about you?” He asked in return amicably as he was rather satisfied with the photos taken, for now at least.
“Lots of em, nya,” Eiji complained. “Too many! We had a ball for each of my big brothers’ and sisters’ eighteenth birthday. I don’t want one, though, they’re all the same! Boring!” He made a face, remembering all the times he’d retreated from the ballroom because his mother kept hissing at him to be more dignified. But that wasn’t important, not now, anyway.
“Aah, but there’s always lotsa great food! And it must be fun if you dance, so I’m sure you’ll have a great time tonight!” he added, not wanting to spoil the evening for Fuji. He was the first human at school he’d actually gotten a chance to really talk to, so making a good impression was important! They were almost at the venue and Eiji turned to him hesitantly. “Um… Are you meeting anyone, Fuji? To go in with?” Someone like Fuji probably had elaborate plans for the evening, he figured.
Remembering Saeki, Fuji supposed that the other wasn't really even close to be considered as "meeting anyone" since the likelihood of him wanting to be found tonight was close to zero. He wasn't in the mood to be sociable although his chance encounter with Eiji did lighten up the mood a little. Perhaps it wouldn't be so bad to stay around him as casual friends. A flash of inspiration and an idea formed in his head, since Eiji was so eager to offer his help earlier, perhaps this would be the perfect opportunity to test the other out in his little game with Saeki.
"Saa...Eiji-kun, how would you like to help me in a little game tonight?" Fuji said it so casually that you wouldn't suspect him of being anything less then angelic.
Eiji perked up at once. He’d seen that Fuji was thinking about something and had been sure he was going to tell him that he was in fact going to wait for someone. He didn’t know if the Day Class girls squealed over the boys in their midst but if they did, Fuji was surely one of them. Hmm, maybe they annoyed him like they did Yuuta-kun?
“A game?” he asked brightly. "Sounds fun!" He remembered Fuji’s cryptic journal entries and grew slightly apprehensive, wondering if he'd have to fill in blanks again... But that wouldn't be fun, would it? And it wouldn't be much of a game so that was probably not it. "Yoosh! I'll do it!" He struck a determined pose. “Yes I will!” Realising he must’ve looked a bit silly, he turned to Fuji again with an embarrassed grin. “What exactly do you want me to do nya?”
“Nothing too complicated, you will just have to help me pass 3 messages to Saeki without anyone else seeing it.” Fuji chuckled softly at Eiji’s antics before petting the other lightly on his arm to show that he didn't mind at all.
Waiting for the questions that he was certain Eiji would asked especially pertaining to if he could see the messages and when he has to pass the messages, Fuji took his time to observe the surroundings around the venue of the ball carefully so as to make sure that it would not be impossible to find him but it wouldn’t be easy unless you were really doing nothing but looking for the entire night.
For his very 1st message, he had already decided that it would be the picture of Eiji in his laidback pose earlier. That would fulfill the first condition set by Saeki, a witness.
Eiji blinked, raising a thoughtful finger to his lip. “Messages? To Sae-chan? That no one else can see?” How mysterious, he thought excitedly. Passing secret messages, maybe in code too, that made him something like… A ninja? Uwaaa! That’d be cool!
“Nya, does no one else mean me too? Er… they won’t get me into trouble, will they? When do I pass them? What happens if I look?” The questions came at an almost rapid-fire rate, the boy bouncing slightly in excitement of having an important ninja-like mission to fulfil.
Sae-chan? Fuji stored away that little snippet of information into his brain before replying to Eiji’s questions. It might be fun to tease Saeki about the girly nickname later.
“Yes, including you too, no, it’s just a harmless game, let’s meet over there every one and a half hours starting from now, once you receive the message, you can pass it to Saeki, if you choose to look the game would be over instantly and you won’t get your reward.” Fuji hid his amusement behind a reassuring smile as he patiently explained everything.
It wasn’t vital that the other agreed but however it would certainly make things more interesting. His alternative plan would be to slip the photos into Saeki’s pocket during the last song of the ball since he was planning to appear once the song starts which will also signify the end of their little game.
Eiji counted out the details on his fingers so he wouldn’t forget, pouting to himself that he couldn’t look- but then again he didn’t want the game to end before seeing what happened- and finally latched onto a very important word. “I get a reward? Hee, what is it? Can you tell me? Or is it a surprise?” He liked surprises- if they were good ones that didn’t involve him knee deep in anything gross and slimey (yes, siblings were cruel even among vampiric nobility) Noticing Fuji had that funny little smile on his face from before he realised he was bouncing and stopped. Only for a moment though, before flashing him a bright grin and a victory sign.
“I'm on it, Fuji! You can count on Kikumaru Eiji! I’ll even synchronise my watch like a super spy!”
“Looks like you are not only a natural at posing,” Fuji complimented as he took out his cell phone. “Let’s exchange numbers; it’s easier this way since I may have to meet you somewhere else if the location is compromised.” He purposely did not mention anything about the reward just to keep the other on his toes.
Eiji blushed again and he turned his gaze away self consciously. “Nya, you gotta stop saying stuff like that, Fuji,” he scolded lightly, pulling out his phone and offering it to Fuji. He hoped the petite human would do the same but when it looked unlikely that Fuji would give him his precious camera phone, Eiji recited his number for him. “All right!” he said, saluting brightly. “Mission start?”
Not the least admonished, Fuji keyed his number and took note of the time on Eiji’s phone before passing it back to him with a casual smile. He had always been protective about his phone since he highly valued his privacy and even though his instincts told him that Eiji could be trusted but he still preferred to keep a distance for now. Nodding his head once, Fuji pointed out the area they were going to meet again in an hour and a half before walking away. “Enjoy the ball.”
A crowd was already beginning to gather in the makeshift ballroom.
Eiji watched the human disappear into the falling shadows, feeling a thrill of excitement. He really didn’t have any idea what kind of ‘game’ Fuji and Sae-chan were playing, but knowing the two of them it would be something really… weird… He spun on his heel, facing the ballroom again and, waving to a couple of familiar faces, made a beeline for the food tables, repeating his earlier phrase. “Mission… Start!”
