This site is full of info about naval guns.  I thought the glossary was the best bit, but then I was mostly in search of  smutty metaphors...  It anyone's writing serious sea battles, it should be pretty useful for that too.

There were several types of firearms available in the 18th century. All of them would be flintlocks, meaning the powder is ignited by a spark from a flint.
