I can't believe I used to think this music was cool...

I've been culling my collection of audiotapes and listening to stuff I haven't heard in years to decide which tapes to buy on CD and which to jettison forever...

This morning I played Catching the Sun, a 1980 release by Spyro Gyra. Back in the day (and yes, I got this when it was new), I thought this was fresh, alternative fusion-jazz ( Read more... )

Oh, I'd say the two most embarassing album purchases of my youth are:
Rapping Duke (Da ha da ha... Anyone? Anyone remember Rapping Duke?)

And Laura Branigan. (Gloria!)

In my defense, I was 12, and it was the first time I was allowed to spend my allowance on music. I got better. :-D

Ah, but did he re-write that rap to tell the story of The Alamo for his 7th grade Texas History class? AND SEW JACKETS FOR BACKUP DANCERS? I think not.

Uh Santa Anna, Uh Santa Anna, Uh Santa Anna lemme rock you lemme rock you Santa Anna, that's all I wanna do, Santa Anna...

I'll just be crying in the corner.

It's OK, we forgive you. :)

I have nostalgia for disco; I was in high school at the peak of the disco craze and that's what we danced to.

Well, I have to admit that I still have a penchant for cheesy 80's music. But, the most embarrassing would have to be "Ice, Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice. My friends and I would move the coffee table in my living room out of the way and do the Electric Slide to that song when I was about 10 or 11.

Ah! So many choices! I must say, I seem to have been blessed with OK, if not usual, taste in Music, so a lot of music I listend to in my youth, I still kinda like (The Ramones, The Clash, Dead Kennedys, etc.)

But, in the wince category are-- Vicious Pink Phenomenon, Classix Nouveux, Bow Wow Wow, The Carpenters, and ABBA.

Now a days, I have trouble even imagining myself listening to ABBA, but I know I did... I think I still have the old 8 tracks to prove it!

Priscilla! damn, Terence Stamp was amazing in that movie!

On topic, I have to put my vote in for ABBA and also James Galway - I was a very odd little child. *g*

Of course, I still have my Duran Duran tapes, and I'm still a fan of Jean Michel Jarre and Mike Oldfield. I'm still odd. ;)

Hmmm. None of the music I ever liked really makes me wince. I still like lots of it, and it's all just sort of in the mix of the wide variety of things I enjoy. Either it has a sort of irony or nostalgia factor now, or I just dig it still.

::nods:: Irony -- that's how the Spyro Gyra thing struck me. What was a fresh sound 25 years ago is "on hold" music today.
