Author Recommendation

Jun 28, 2003 00:15

Being the overly large procrastinator that I am, I've been meaning to do more recommendations for quite some time-- and in particular, recommend this author. She (I'm using 'her/she' simply for the sake of convenience) friended me a little while ago and I had a look at her journal-- and found some of the most interesting, well-written stories I could imagine. I've been reccing them to individual people, but I really want to get more people to read her work as I'm sure many of you enjoy intelligent writing.

tomcanty has a writing style that manages to be lyrical while avoiding verbosity- every one of her stories (and I do wish there were more of them) have a certain quality to them that endears them to me. Rich with historical detail and description, tomcanty's work has a clarity of thought and word that is enviable. Her plotlines are interesting and imaginative, a departure from the usual kind of story found in fandom. Indeed, her stories combine originality of ideas as well as excellent characterisation, pacing and theme, topped with excellently done stylism. tomcanty tells her stories and forms her characters with deft, sure strokes-- she is definitely a writer who should be high on your reading lists.

Above all, her work is intelligent, and for the intelligent reader. I have no explanation for why people aren't beating paths to her doorstep and asking for more fiction.

The Nothing Language- Tom. Cornelius. Post-war Paris. An exploration of language and concept told alongside the story of how Tom acquired Nagini. This story conveys the atmosphere of Paris, and the characters within it in a manner that makes me jealous.

Returning Students Are the Nastiest- Tom. The orphanage. Exploring the nature of magic and people themselves. An excellent portrayal of Tom's character and fabulous writing.

April 20th- Tom. Austria. Nazis. Bears. Five little boys. A stylistic and almost surreal story which interweaves history and the harry potter universe, filled with excellent writing.

So read tomcanty's work. Really.
