omg. i just have a lot of feelings. ever_neutral August 5 2011, 07:23:02 UTC
LOL @ your BSG/TVD comparison.

OK, I have serious ish with the Caroline/Matt business? I'm just so WTF at the fact that Caroline essentially compels Matt to forget (and he's made it so the compulsion doesn't work, but to her knowledge it *does*), and then continues having a relationship with him? IDEK. I understand that there is a certain level of consent there, but it still rubs me the wrong way.

Yeah, really not happy with the continued fridging. Isobel was yet another AWESOME WOMAN underappreciated by fandom and then… poof. (Not saying that fandom had an influence, necessarily, but whatever.) And yeah, my understanding is that she was compelled to commit suicide. There might be something there about Klaus basically ruining everyone's lives, "good" and "bad". But: I do wonder why Isobel picked him for Klaus to possess. Did she want to destroy him as thoroughly as herself? -- OOH. YES. THIS. I LOVE IT. and, yeah, AlariKlaus cracked my shit up. Particularly at the dance when he's like, "THIS GUY IS PRETTY TWISTED, HEY?" and Damon' ( ... )

part two, lmao. ever_neutral August 5 2011, 07:31:07 UTC
I kind of like the idea of Bonnie/Damon too. Their camaraderie in 2.18 was a thing of beauty. But IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN, lol.

Damon, meanwhile, continues to up his game on both the Magnificent Bastard and Psychotic Jackass fronts… But to do that, they do need to depend on Damon to step back and make the brutal calls, and I am all about him pointing that out as bluntly as possible rather than being a dumb martyr about it.HAHA, THIS ENTIRE PARAGRAPH IS FLAWLESS. I mean. Wow. "YOU CAN ALL GO TO HELL" is like, THE QUINTESSENTIAL DAMON SALVATORE MOMENT OF ALL THE MOMENTS, I can't even handle it. I kind of want to bitch-slap him to hell and back, but also stand up and applaud? idek. ALL OF THE FEELINGS, lol. and, yeah, his bitching Stefan out after the Bonnie business was ten levels of awesome. Not nice at all, but it's not like niceness has anything to do with anything. I LOVE BITCHY!DAMON BESTEST OF ALL, OKAY ( ... )

BITCHY DAMON IS THE BEST DAMON.

I like the idea that Damon doesn't actually have as much control as he'd like, that it's backfiring on him.

....YES. So I'm particularly relieved for her sake he let Andie go when he did, because he's really coming undone.

He wants to alienate the people who care about him; he also longs to be "saved"--for some special person to break through his defences and ~make him better.

THIS EXACTLY. It's totally about wanting someone to see all of him and still stay to help.

I feel like I saw SO many reactions to the last few episodes! I suppose I don't know how good people thought they were because I was avoiding actual spoilers but there seemed to be lots of feelings.

haha! I am excited to be caught up with plenty of time to get excited for next season, though.

AlariKlaus cracked my shit up. Particularly at the dance when he's like, "THIS GUY IS PRETTY TWISTED, HEY?" and Damon's like, "I'm not impressed" and AlariKlaus is like, EXCUSE?

HAHAHA, yes. Such unashamed arrogance in his villainness. (von! von underimpressed young upstart! MUA AH AH AH AH!)

Yeah, I actually do think there's a lot of interesting work going on with taking this archetype (girl-object-of-all-the-affections) and giving her the depth she would probably need to have in these circumstances? I think she's a good character. But yeah, I like her best when she's fighting to survive, or when she's being manipulative - ie when she's actually doing the fighting back she spends most of her screen time saying she won't. Which, again, is interesting so I'm not hating on her as a character, I just kind of roll my eyes hearing it again.

she is the super-socially-privileged girl who’s the special-est of all the other super-socially-privileged girls because all the boys love her the most.

Heh, this is exactly why I didn't identify with her for the longest time. Caroline and her "It's never me, it's always Elena" speech? SOLD. Elena, not so much. And, actually, I still don't really identify with her. It's more that I like seeing that ideal torn down - the perfect Elena we thought we knew is totally an act, and she's a complete mess underneath.

Does the compulsion work based on what the vampire tells the victim to do, or what the vampire wants the victim to do?I'm not really sure, but my interpretation was that Damon had been compelling Andie all along not to be afraid of him or bothered by him being a vampire, so she's kind of conditioned not to care that he's completely losing it. And at that point he's too out of his mind to compel her effectively, so she doesn't listen to him. Like, "this is what happens when you mistreat your toys" kind of thing? He's totally ( ... )

Yes! I feel like she's ending up being as much of a deconstruction as Stefan was at the beginning - this is what the typical tragic heroine is thinking, and it's not as admirable as we're usually led to believe, without making her in any way bad. Which I think is a really interesting place to take her.

oh, that makes sense. Which...actually is a fairly solid metaphor for the conditioning and gaslighting that goes on before an abusive relationship gets as bad as it does.
