omg. i just have a lot of feelings. ever_neutral August 5 2011, 07:23:02 UTC
LOL @ your BSG/TVD comparison.

OK, I have serious ish with the Caroline/Matt business? I'm just so WTF at the fact that Caroline essentially compels Matt to forget (and he's made it so the compulsion doesn't work, but to her knowledge it *does*), and then continues having a relationship with him? IDEK. I understand that there is a certain level of consent there, but it still rubs me the wrong way.

Yeah, really not happy with the continued fridging. Isobel was yet another AWESOME WOMAN underappreciated by fandom and then… poof. (Not saying that fandom had an influence, necessarily, but whatever.) And yeah, my understanding is that she was compelled to commit suicide. There might be something there about Klaus basically ruining everyone's lives, "good" and "bad". But: I do wonder why Isobel picked him for Klaus to possess. Did she want to destroy him as thoroughly as herself? -- OOH. YES. THIS. I LOVE IT. and, yeah, AlariKlaus cracked my shit up. Particularly at the dance when he's like, "THIS GUY IS PRETTY TWISTED, HEY?" and Damon's like, "I'm not impressed" and AlariKlaus is like, EXCUSE? lmfao.

omg. haha. Your whole paragraph there about Elena's man pain just makes me :D which is a bit weird I guess 'cause she's my woman, but man. It's just this complete debunking of this myth in fandom that Elena's not well-drawn or flawed? like, THIS: she is the super-socially-privileged girl who’s the special-est of all the other super-socially-privileged girls because all the boys love her the most. The vast majority of the time, her skill set on display is performance of femininity. -- OMG. I LOVE THE WAY YOU PUT THIS? Because that is something that Elena gets a lot of flak for in fandom, but it's what makes me so INTERESTED in her? She does have this special brand of emotional power over ~all the boys in the yard, just like Katherine did--BUT ONLY BECAUSE SHE'S KATHERINE'S EXACT COPY!

I mean, let's be real. Elena is not that innately special. (That's not a slam; she is technically just an ordinary girl, surrounded by extraordinary circumstances.) It's the people in her life who elevate her to that level of special snowflake. Stefan. Damon. Bonnie. Klaus. And because her life really is more horrible than the average person's, she's able to use that trauma to justify her feelings of inferiority. "It's all because of me." As horrid as it sounds--the fact that she is the doppelganger? Gives her life meaning. She resents the fact that everybody wants to die for her. but. she also enjoys it. How could she not? As much as the idea of her best friend dying for her horrifies her, she hears Damon's totally unabashed "I will always choose you", and is FLATTERED, ALL THE SAME. IT IS DELICIOUS COMPLEXITY, lol.

So, yeah, I guess where I stand with Elena is that all the things you list as her flaws, are the reasons I like her so much? haha. It's sort of like how a lot of people I know were disappointed by Elena's actions in 2.03 re: manipulating Damon, and I was actually kind of like, YES. MORE OF THIS, SHOW. idek.

part two, lmao. ever_neutral August 5 2011, 07:31:07 UTC
I kind of like the idea of Bonnie/Damon too. Their camaraderie in 2.18 was a thing of beauty. But IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN, lol.

Damon, meanwhile, continues to up his game on both the Magnificent Bastard and Psychotic Jackass fronts… But to do that, they do need to depend on Damon to step back and make the brutal calls, and I am all about him pointing that out as bluntly as possible rather than being a dumb martyr about it.

HAHA, THIS ENTIRE PARAGRAPH IS FLAWLESS. I mean. Wow. "YOU CAN ALL GO TO HELL" is like, THE QUINTESSENTIAL DAMON SALVATORE MOMENT OF ALL THE MOMENTS, I can't even handle it. I kind of want to bitch-slap him to hell and back, but also stand up and applaud? idek. ALL OF THE FEELINGS, lol. and, yeah, his bitching Stefan out after the Bonnie business was ten levels of awesome. Not nice at all, but it's not like niceness has anything to do with anything. I LOVE BITCHY!DAMON BESTEST OF ALL, OKAY.

This compulsion business is so ambiguous. I kind of like that? I mean, I like the idea that Damon doesn't actually have as much control as he'd like, that it's backfiring on him. There's something not quite right there. Like, he had to tell her several times to GTFO, and even then she still *stopped at the door to make sure he was okay?* WTH. That fact alone kind of makes me think it's the latter, that the compulsion works based on what the vampire wants the victim to do. And since Damon is so affected and possesses so little self-control right now, the strength of his compulsion is weakening. That whole scene with Damon trying to force Andie to get out, and punishing her for wanting to stay, is like a microcosm of his entire emotional struggle with people. He wants to alienate the people who care about him; he also longs to be "saved"--for some special person to break through his defences and ~make him better. Also, on a separate note, Ian was holygodwowamazing in that scene. Good Lord. That was straight up ugly ugly ugly, and I'm honestly not sure how many actors would be willing to go there.

anyway. haha, DO you keep hearing about how epic the last episodes are? I have mixed feelings about them myself. 2.20 is really fabulous, I will say. I AM SAD THESE DISCUSSIONS ARE COMING TO AN END THOUGH! D:

BITCHY DAMON IS THE BEST DAMON.

I like the idea that Damon doesn't actually have as much control as he'd like, that it's backfiring on him.

....YES. So I'm particularly relieved for her sake he let Andie go when he did, because he's really coming undone.

He wants to alienate the people who care about him; he also longs to be "saved"--for some special person to break through his defences and ~make him better.

THIS EXACTLY. It's totally about wanting someone to see all of him and still stay to help.

I feel like I saw SO many reactions to the last few episodes! I suppose I don't know how good people thought they were because I was avoiding actual spoilers but there seemed to be lots of feelings.

haha! I am excited to be caught up with plenty of time to get excited for next season, though.

HAHAHA, yes. Such unashamed arrogance in his villainness. (von! von underimpressed young upstart! MUA AH AH AH AH!)

Yeah, I actually do think there's a lot of interesting work going on with taking this archetype (girl-object-of-all-the-affections) and giving her the depth she would probably need to have in these circumstances? I think she's a good character. But yeah, I like her best when she's fighting to survive, or when she's being manipulative - ie when she's actually doing the fighting back she spends most of her screen time saying she won't. Which, again, is interesting so I'm not hating on her as a character, I just kind of roll my eyes hearing it again.
