Banned Books Week - Day 1
September 30 - October 6 is
Banned Books Week, an annual celebration of the fight against literary censorship.
Scary Stories Series by Alvin Schwartz
A favorite among children since its publication almost thirty years ago, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and the other two books in Alvin Schwartz's trilogy are goulishly illustrated and fiendishly fun to read. Each book consists of a mix of folklore, songs, and original stories that range from silly to hair-raising. All three volumes contain an afterword with explanations for each tale and a brief history of the ones that have been passed down for years. They're favorite among children across the country, but despite this, not only were the Scary Stories books the number four most-challenged books in 2008, but they are the number one most challenged books of the last decade and the sevenths most challenged books of this decade. They are challenged for promoting occult/satanism, religious viewpoint, and violence.
