Banned Books Week - Day 2

Oct 02, 2012 19:53

September 30 - October 6 is Banned Books Week, an annual celebration of the fight against literary censorship.

The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, is a disturbing look at a dystopian future where the ruling class keeps those less fortunate in their place by forcing their teenagers to fight against each other in a televised death match, the titular "Hunger Games." The trilogy follows a young girl named Katniss Everdeen, who takes her young sister's place in the games and, against all odds, manages not only to survive, but to turn the whole system on its head and start a revolution that's less important to her than keep her friends and family alive.

Katniss' struggle and growth from a taciturn loner into a soldier and strategist over the course of the three books resonates with readers of all ages and has, indeed, become a worldwide phenomenon, spawning a series of movies, endless merchandising, and a level of cultural recognition nearly on par with Harry Potter. Not all of the recognition has been good, however. The Hunger Games trilogy has found itself on the ALA's top ten list of most frequently challenged books for the past two years for allegations of anti-ethnic; anti-family; insensitivity; offensive language; occult/satanic; violence; sexually explicit and unsuited to age group.
