That's how the Cilic-Del Potro match was to me. That's the only one I watched last night (other than snippets of Jankovic losing spectacularly to Marion Bartoli and bits of Safina's stupidity vs. Cornet. Thank the lords she pulled it out!) 'cos I had to get up early this morning. Good lord I started falling asleep watching it.
Other than Gasquet-Gonzo, of which I only caught the last set, no other match has really got me excited this AO. Safin-Fed, yes, but it was a dismal display by Captain Headcase. Hewitt-Gonzo was pretty good but I was so tired watching it that I fell asleep. I missed Federer vs. Berdych last night (DAMN YOU BERDY! Up two sets and choke choke chokity choke), Ivo-Ancic earlier this week was a brain scratch and I can't remember what else were great matches so far. It's been hard staying up for the late matches, for one, and the matches I have been awake for haven't been oh-so-spectacular.
OK, that's not really fair. There have been some great matches; unfortunately, I have missed them. And watching Baghdatis (holy crap, I thought he'd disappeared) and Djokovic is another mind number. Granted, I'm working so I'm only half-watching but it's such a snoozer! The match has moments of brilliance but overall, it's meh.
But Cilic-Delpo last night. First off, I'm mad that Cilic lost. I just don't like Delpo. I've seen him in person and he's a good player but something about him irks me (ETA in 2011: Clearly times change because now I am a big Delpo fan. Go figure). And I really like Cilic, who reminds me of DeHeart, who used to play for my uni. Cilic is a pretty good player but OMG. The boy has zero emotion. Only once did I see him get really angry and smash his racquet. And I know it was the first match on Margaret Court Arena but wow, that was a pretty quiet crowd. The players just seemed flat on the energy and excitement level. Delpo got a bit into it but Cilic just seemed so passive and distant. It annoyed me. I feel like if some passion had exuded from him, he could've been the winner.
I just hope the kid wasn't sick or something.
Anyway...I got to work just as the Federer-Berdych five-setter had wrapped up. Sigh. Never before have I longed for the Fed to lose early in a Slam. At least not this much.
Gael Monfils vs. Gilles Simon better be good tonight. Good thing about Gael is at least he's silly and quirky on court. And Tsonga meets Blake, so that should be good too. I definitely need a nap once I get home though...gotta stay up for the tennis and then Wuthering Heights on Masterpiece afterwards. It's going to be a long night.
