Firstly, I had a heavier-than-usual workload today (certainly heavier than last weekend), but I believe I handled it pretty darn well.
Secondly, I've realized I am lacking a couple of the pieces of material I'll need for the floor. Strips to make the transition from the kitchen down to the landing at the garage/house door, and to make the transition from the kitchen tile floor to the hardwood floors in the dining room and living room. I went to a local flooring sales/installation shop to ask what to use, and where to get it. The man I spoke with directed me to Valu hardware. I love to go there because they haven't lost touch with the concept of service, as the big box stores have. Not only did they have what I need, but it can be installed after the tile goes down, which means that I can do the main installation Monday, even if I can't afford the strips until my next paycheck, which comes Thursday. There were two other nice things I experienced. The strips now come in a whole bunch of funky subdued colors, far beyond the aluminum and gold tones presently in this house. The idea of putting all this time, money, and effort into a lovely new floor, then ruining the effect by trimming it with something which looks like chrome makes me gag. The other nice thing was that the folks at Valu were helpful and kind, not at all condescending. They laughed at my jokes, which earns big points in my book. I was less than impressed with the people at Lowes, at least the manager of the flooring department. He's the one who pulled my order and loaded it in my truck, and he honest-to-God seemed surprised when he remarked, "These are heavy!" Each carton weighs about 68 pounds. I wanted to ask him if it was his first day on the job, because I'd expect someone of that rank to have figured it out by now. If he was saying it because he thought as a female I would have no idea, he was mistaken.
I lacked the energy today to dress in a costume, but I am forever amazed at what my coworkers come up with. The best one today, in my opinion, was that of Glen in the produce department, who was dressed as a giant whoopee cushion. He had fleece fabric in that awesome soft-rose color they come in, made in a cape form with a hem rounded the way they are, and shoulders that curved up into the neck area. The usual verbage was written on the fabric with marker, and then a tubular crownless hat of the same fabric, imitating the opening of the whoopee cushion, completed the ensemble. Of course, a couple of my work friends knew why I especially liked it, and observed that I could provide the sounds and uh, smells to make it realistic, if need be. Ha ha ha.
