My Love of Fantasy

I have to look on the bright side of things and well, next summer I will be in Alaska on vacation during the month of July. ‘Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince’ will be released next July. This inevitably will mean that my sister, Jeannette, and I will be able to see the movie together. We were able to see ‘Order of the Phoenix’ together since my trips back home usually take place every other year. So, in a sense perhaps (for me anyway) the delay will be a good thing. For me it means family bonding over ‘Harry Potter’.

All right, I am done being a nerd. Seriously though, I can’t help it that I am involved in the ‘Harry Potter’ fandom. It’s just something that has been a part of my life since I picked up ‘The Goblet of Fire’ back in 2005 and became enthralled with the tale of a young wizard battling against the Dark Arts. I have always been a girl for fantasy and in my youth I was obsessed with fairy tales. This fixation in turn beget my own versions of these fairy tales I was so fond of. I started making loose interpretations of the Brothers Grimm’s stories when I was 8. To create these makeshift fables I would take notebook paper and scrawl the story of whatever fantasy heroine I preferred, although Cinderella seemed to be my go to girl as I wrote 4 or 5 versions of her tale. My artistry skills were also put to use since I was the one and only illustrator for these short novels. Once finished I would bind these notebook paper interpretations with staples and before long I had a whole library of fables written by Christina Shelton. As I grew older I continued to write and the longest story I ever attempted was actually a retooling of ‘Snow White’ set during the 1800’s.

Sadly, I no longer have the ability to write fiction as I once did and therefore I pour over fantasy books such as the ‘Twilight’ series and of course, ‘Harry Potter’ all the while fantasizing that I too could write as well as JK Rowling or Stephenie Meyer.
