there is nothing in downtown pittsburgh and it pretty much shuts down after 7 pm save for some bars.

We dont REALLY have a 'subway'.....

I live and love living in, Oakland. It's quite the public transit hub and it's close to squirrel hill, shadyside (where you may prefer) and south side/bloomfield/lawrenceville area. it's close to everything basically and tons of buses go through here.

Drawback: It's a college area.

I"m 30 and I still live here, but not without people asking me why. ;)

i was wondering how advanced the 't' was considering a large portion of my reading was from urbanrail.net and they also claim that detroit has light rail [which it doesn't].

part of me is thinking center city philly is where i'd like to be but it's so expensive. sigh.

I've never been on it but I've heard it's useless.

No offense to the above poster, but I'd be miserable living in Oakland!

I live in Bloomfield, which is the "little Italy" of Pittsburgh. It still has its share of Italian grocery stores and such and a nice neigborhoody (is that a word?) feel to it; however, there are a lot of young people around here and a lot within walking distance. There are also buses to access downtown, Oakland, etc.

I would also recommend Lawrenceville to you. From what you're saying about your preferences, I think that might be your best bet. It's right next to my neighborhood, but it's more "artsy"/"hipster". It's kind of "up and coming" (pardon all of these quoted phrases). Some parts are a little sketchy in my opinion, but I would definitely consider living there if I were to leave Bloomfield.

Do you know if your office would be downtown? It'd be pretty easy to get there by bus from both of the neighborhoods I mentioned. Let me know if you'd like more info on the buses.

And... Let me know if you have any other questions!! :)

Ross Park Mall is northside, north of Millvale and Fox Chapel, on a major street called McKnight Road. Note: Fox Chapel can be pricey. The rest of the area is not so bad, mileage varying.

There's bus lines in the area, but you'll definitely need that port authority link to sort them out. They're still greek to me. You'd very likely need or want a car. It's more like an outlying suburb of the city proper, honestly.

Ross Park is North Hills, not North Side. North Side is commonly used to refer to city neighborhoods, but Ross is far outside city limits in the burbs. If you're working there, you will absolutely need a car.

it's hard to get to ross park mall from any of these neighborhoods mentioned, you wouldn't be taking the T (light rail) from any of them, and you'd have to take a bus to downtown and transfer and then take a bus to the mall.

I work at the robinson mall from oakland, it's quite a hike. BUT, luckily, there is ONE bus that goes all the way out there.

You might want to do a neighborhood search.

i always get the oak's mixed up. One is right next to robinson and has PTI, and the other is TOTALLY across the city.

You say you'll be working at the ross park mall? Might i recommend bellevue? It's not necessarily "artsy" but its close and a pretty neat community.
Though if you really want artsy, I would say try to get somewhere near East Liberty. That place has so many unique restaurants and cafes. There are buses there often, and I think there will be a couple that go to Ross Park Mall.
I second what littledeadgirl7 says about the port authority though. I LOVE taking the bus. LOVE IT.
