there is nothing in downtown pittsburgh and it pretty much shuts down after 7 pm save for some bars.

We dont REALLY have a 'subway'.....

I live and love living in, Oakland. It's quite the public transit hub and it's close to squirrel hill, shadyside (where you may prefer) and south side/bloomfield/lawrenceville area. it's close to everything basically and tons of buses go through here.

Drawback: It's a college area.

I"m 30 and I still live here, but not without people asking me why. ;)

i was wondering how advanced the 't' was considering a large portion of my reading was from urbanrail.net and they also claim that detroit has light rail [which it doesn't].

part of me is thinking center city philly is where i'd like to be but it's so expensive. sigh.

I've never been on it but I've heard it's useless.

We do have a light rail system, but it runs only from downtown to several Pittsburgh neighborhoods and then suburbs known collectively as the South Hills, across the Monongahela River from downtown Pittsburgh. I live in Brookline, of those Pittsburgh-proper neighborhoods in the South Hills, but ride a bus more often than the T, but only because there's a stop right outside my door.

As far as neighborhoods that would probably appeal to you and have decent food shopping within a reasonable distance, I'd recommend Bloomfield, Polish Hill, and Shadyside. There are many bus lines running through each. If you haven't seen the Wikipedia page on Pittsburgh neighborhoods, go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Pittsburgh_neighborhoods and take note of which neighborhoods are adjacent to one another.

Much luck with your move!
