I declared myself fit to travel to Johannesburg for my conference meeting even if I had contracted chicunguya. It's so advantageous to be one's own doctor. So my work colleague, Lise, and I left Seychelles on Tuesday 25th April 2006.
We stayed at the Birchwood Hotel, which is a short drive from the airport, and about half an hour's drive from Johannesburg city centre. Unfortunately we never had the chance to visit the city, but we were close by a big shopping mall(East Rand Mall), which kept us busy whilst not working. The conference meeting lasted 2 days. It was very strange indeed. Apart from the secretary's assisstant, Rozelle, everybody else was at least twice my age. This is because most of them were directors of their country's respective civil aviation authorities. So it was very challenging to keep up with conversion in the tea break. In any case, everything to do with work went well. Thursday 27th April turned out to be South Africa National Day and it was a public holiday, and the bloody banks were closed, so we couldn't change any money and thus not much shopping.:( oh well, we made up for it on friday. I had to buy a few jumpers to deal with the 12 degrees South African temperature because all my jumpers from Sydney are still coming down to Seychelles on some ship.
In any case, my most important buy was 2 bottles of angustura bitters which I will use to make Lemon Lime and Bitters at home.
