“I have something for you.” Adam told Rafi as he got up from his chair and walked over to his nightstand.
Adam’s therapy had been going very well. He could walk a lot more before he needed a break. He also walked mostly without any assistance. He was very proud of himself.
“My mother wrapped it.” Adam spoke shyly as he produced a small gift and held it out to Rafi.
“Adam, you shouldn’t have gotten me anything.” Rafi stated as he reached to take the gift from him.
“Just open it.” Adam responded with a big smile.
Carefully, Rafi unwrapped the present. It was a small box that jewelry usually came in. As he opened the box, Rafi gasped. Inside was a beautiful silver cross on a silver chain.
“Adam, this is too much. I can’t accept this.” Rafi declared as he closed the box and tried to give it back to Adam. He wouldn’t take it.
“It’s not too much. I designed it and my friend Cassidy made it for me. I just wanted to give you something to thank you for everything. If it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t be getting out of here next week. I’d still be lying in this bed feeling sorry for myself.” Adam explained.
“It’s really beautiful, Adam, but I shouldn’t take it. We aren’t supposed to accept gifts.” Rafi lied. Truthfully, they had no guidelines about accepting gifts from patients. He had accepted things in the past. However, it was usually some homemade craft, maybe some cookies, or a mug. The necklace felt like crossing a line.
“Come on, Rafi. It can be our little secret. I really want you to have it.” Adam pleaded.
“Alright.” Rafi agreed hesitantly.
Adam smiled brightly at him. Rafi couldn’t help himself. He smiled back.
“I want to see how it looks on you. Would that be okay?” Adam asked.
“Yeah…okay.” Rafi responded as he took the necklace from the box. His hands were shaking as he tried to hook the necklace around his neck.
“Let me try.” Adam commanded softly when Rafi couldn’t get it.
Rafi took a deep breath and closed his eyes as he let Adam take the necklace. He could tell that they were crossing a line. He didn’t know what to do. He had never had this type of situation with another patient. He had never wanted to cross a line with a patient like he did with Adam. He had felt it for weeks now. He was sure that Adam did too.
It took Adam a minutes, but he finally clasped the necklace. He took a step back to look at the necklace on Rafi. The two men locked eyes.
“Beautiful.” Adam whispered as he moved slightly closer to Rafi. Rafi didn’t know if he was talking about the necklace or him.
Suddenly, Adam’s lips were on Rafi’s lips. Rafi knew it was going to happen. He wanted it to happen, but at the same time he knew that it was wrong. He knew that he should stop it before it got out of control. He really tried to stop, but instead he found himself opening his mouth to deepen the kiss. Adam sighed and cupped his face in his hands. Rafi allowed his hands to rest on Adam’s hips. A knock on the door a few moments later startled the two men apart. Adam’s mother came into the room.
“Adam, sweetie, I brought you some of those cupcakes that you like so much from that bakery on Sherwood.” Leila declared as she walked in. “Oh Rafi, it’s nice to see you.”
“It’s nice to see you too, Leila.” Rafi responded trying to hide his embarrassment at almost being caught kissing her son.
“Am I interrupting something?” Leila asked as she sensed some tension in the air.
“No. Adam and I just finished up a session.” Rafi answered quickly before Adam had a chance to say anything.
“How did it go, Adam?” Leila inquired as she sat the box of cupcakes down.
“Really good.” Adam replied with a dreamy smile at Rafi.
“That’s great, sweetie. Rafi, would you like a cupcake?” Leila asked as she opened the box.
“Thank you, but I should go. I have another session in a few minutes.” Rafi explained as he headed for the door.
As he reached the door, Rafi turned around and looked at Adam. His mother had her back to them as she fussed with the cupcakes. Adam smiled brightly at him. Quickly, Rafi turned away and hurried from the room.
