For the past several weeks, Adam had been working really hard in his physical therapy sessions. He was determined to get better. After a few workouts in the pool, Rafi had started trying to get him to walk. The first few times were really hard. Adam hurt all over. He wanted to give up. Rafi wouldn’t let him. Now, Adam could walk almost two feet while holding onto something before he needed to stop.

Besides his physical therapy, Adam was really opening up to Robert, his counselor. They talked about a lot of things. Things that had happened to Adam even before the attack. Adam had never been ashamed of his sexuality, but for the first time he felt truly proud to be who he was.

“How are you feeling today, Adam?” Rafi questioned as he joined Adam in the therapy room.

“Really good. I asked Dr. Samuels to take me off the pain meds today.” Adam told him.

“Are you sure about that? There is still going to be pain while you continue to recover.” Rafi explained.

“I know. I just don’t want to become dependent on the pills. I’ve heard too many stories about people who become addicted to pain killers after something like this. I don’t want to be one of them. I talked to Dr. Samuels. I can have over-the-counter medicine if I really need it and she said that if the pain gets too bad she can always put me back on the pain meds.” Adam responded.

“I am glad that you talked with Dr. Samuels and thought it out. Promise you’ll tell me if you have too much pain.” Rafi commanded softly.

“I will. I promise.” Adam whispered in reply.

Rafi and Adam got to work on his sessions. Rafi helped Adam stretch out before he started to practice his walking. He was shaky on his legs, but Rafi could see the determination on his face. Adam outdid himself. He pushed himself to walk almost three feet with assistance and then to take a few steps without any assistance.

“What’s gotten into you, Adam? It’s good to see you so determined and focused, but it’s just usually more of a struggle with you.” Rafi said at the end of their session as he helped Adam back into his wheelchair.

“I just really want to get better. Christmas is only a few weeks away. I want to be able to get out of here by then. Dr. Samuels said it might be possible.” Adam explained with hope in his voice.

“That’s great…But you’re Jewish aren’t you…so isn’t it Hanukah?” Rafi asked with a smile.

“I am Jewish and I celebrate Hanukah with my family which is nice, but I always celebrate Christmas with my friends. My friend Allison goes all out. It literally looks like the North Pole threw up in her apartment and I just love it.” Adam answered with a huge smile as he thought of past Christmases.

“It’s good to see you looking forward to something.” Rafi stated.

“What about you? You’re Catholic, right? What do you do for the holidays?” Adam quizzed as Rafi wheeled him to his room.

“My family is Catholic. I guess I am kind of a lapsed Catholic. I still go to midnight mass with my family on Christmas Eve. My mother’s family is from Mexico, so she follows a lot of the Mexican traditions. We have a large nativity and a very small Christmas tree. We exchange presents on Christmas Day.” Rafi enlightened.

“I went to midnight mass once. I almost fell asleep, but to be fair I was only about eleven or twelve at the time. My parents always wanted me to understand other religions and cultures and whatever, so I’d be more well-rounded and open-minded.” Adam explained as Rafi helped him into bed.

“I wish more parents were like that.” Rafi declared with a smile at Adam.

“Me too.” Adam agreed as he settled into his bed.
