“How are you feeling today, Adam?” Rafi asked as Adam wheeled himself into the therapy room a few days later.
“I feel pretty good. I had my first session with Robert today.” Adam told him with a smile.
“Was it easier talking to him?” Rafi asked.
“I don’t know why, but it was.” Adam answered.
“That’s good. I am so proud of you, Adam. I think you deserve a reward for all the hard work you’ve been doing. How would you like to go in the pool today and do some water therapy?” Rafi questioned.
“Really?” Adam responded happily.
“I was going to wait until next week to start getting you in the pool, but I think you’re ready. Your arms are strong enough now. It will take some of the pressure off your joints and we can start working on getting your legs moving.” Rafi explained to him.
“Sounds good.” Adam replied.
Two nurses helped Adam get ready to go in the pool while Rafi got changed. When Adam was ready, a nurse took him to the indoor pool. Rafi was waiting for him. He helped Adam get from his chair to the lift that would lower him into the pool. He taught Adam how to work the controls for the lift. When Adam knew what to do, Rafi got in the pool and waited for Adam to lower himself.
“Whenever you’re ready.” Rafi told him as he stood in the pool.
Adam pushed the button. The lift began to lower. The water was cold, but it felt good on his sore body.
“Are you okay?” Rafi inquired when Adam was completely submerged.
“Yeah.” Adam responded.
“Good. I’m going to get you off the lift now.” Rafi spoke as he undid the harness that was holding Adam.
When Adam was completely free, he took a deep breath. Panic filled him. He had always liked to swim, but it was different now that he didn’t have full control over his body.
“Adam, calm down. I’ve got you. Just take a breath and calm down.” Rafi soothed as he held onto Adam.
Adam closed his eyes and took a few deep breaths. He concentrated on the feeling of Rafi’s arms holding him. He knew that he was safe. He trusted Rafi to not let anything happen to him. After a few moments, Adam opened his eyes and smiled. Rafi smiled back.
“I’m sorry.” Adam whispered.
“There’s nothing to be sorry for. It just takes some getting used to, but I’m right here and I won’t let anything happen to you.” Rafi told him as he helped Adam to float in the water.
“I’m alright now.” Adam spoke after a few minutes.
“Are you ready to start doing some exercises?” Rafi asked.
“Yeah…I think so.” Adam declared.
Rafi led Adam over to the side of the pool. There was a slight ledge there and bars that he could hold on to, so he wouldn’t feel completely out of control. As Adam sat there, Rafi began to move Adam’s legs. After he had worked with them for awhile, Rafi instructed Adam to try to move his legs on his own. It took him a few minutes, but he was able to move them slightly.
“That’s awesome, Adam!” Rafi exclaimed at the movement. “You’ll be walking again in no time.”
Adam just smiled and tried to move his legs again. He moved them a few more times before Rafi told him that it was time to get out of the pool.
When Adam was alone in bed that night, he tried to move his legs again. Rafi had told him that it might not be as easy to move them out of the water yet. Adam smiled brightly as he saw his legs move just slightly. For the first time since the attack, Adam really allowed himself to believe that he would make a full recovery.
