“Nadine, can I talk to you for a minute?” Rafi asked his boss at the end of the day as he knocked on her open office door.
“Of course, Rafi…come in and site down.” Nadine told him as she looked up from her desk.
Rafi entered the office and shut the door. He took a seat in front of Nadine’s desk. He had hid the necklace from Adam under his shirt. He felt like it was burning him. He didn’t want Nadine to see it and ask questions.
“What’s on your mind, Rafi?” Nadine inquired after several minutes of silence.
“Well, I know that we’re a little slow around here right now with most of the patients going home for the holidays, so I was wondering if I could have some time off. I have a bunch of vacation time that I haven’t used.” Rafi explained.
“I think we can arrange something. When did you want to start your vacation?” Nadine questioned as she pulled up the work schedule on her computer.
“Immediately.” Rafi answered quickly.
“Is there something wrong, Rafi? A family emergency or something?” Nadine quizzed. Rafi was one of her hardest workers. He was never late. He never called off sick. He took very few vacation days. This wasn’t like him at all.
“No…Nothing like that. I’ve just been feeling burnt out lately. I need a break and I just thought now would be a good time.” Rafi told her.
Okay…Well, you do work harder than most people I know, so you deserve a break. You are only the primary therapist for Adam right now.” Nadine spoke as she looked at her computer again.
“Yeah…All my other primaries have been released.” Rafi confirmed.
“Adam’s file says that he is being released on Friday. That’s only three days away. Are you sure you don’t want to wait until after he’s released? I know that the two of you have become close. I would think that you’d want to see him get out of here.” Nadine said.
“I just really need the break.” Rafi told her.
“Are you positive there’s nothing wrong, Rafi?” Nadine questioned again.
“No. There’s nothing wrong. I’m just tired.” Rafi responded.
“As long as it’s what you really want, I don’t see why you can’t take some vacation time. Paul and I can cover for you.” Nadine told him.
“Great! Thanks, Nadine.” Rafi exclaimed with a smile as he stood up.
“I’ll mark you down for a week off, but I’ll call you next week. If you still need some time, we can discuss it more then.” Nadine enlightened.
“Sounds good. Thanks again.” Rafi spoke as he headed out of her office.
Rafi felt much better as he gathered his things and left the building. He had crossed a line with Adam. He had become too close. He needed distance from him.
As he drove away from the building, Rafi felt a little guilty for leaving without telling Adam. However, he knew that it was for the best. As soon as Adam was out, he would move on with his life and forget all about Rafi.

“Sounds good. Thanks again.” Rafi spoke as he headed out of her office.
Rafi felt much better as he gathered his things and left the building. He had crossed a line with Adam. He had become too close. He needed distance from him.
As he drove away from the building, Rafi felt a little guilty for leaving without telling Adam. However, he knew that it was for the best. As soon as Adam was out, he would move on with his life and forget all about Rafi.
