I thought it was about time I told you about the dramas of last Saturday. Not yesterday but the Saturday before. I've been meaning to tell you guys about it for a week, but I've had other things going on. That and I'm lazy. I've made some illustrations for your convenience.
So we were trying to make a Brazillian desert, called churros. For those of you who, like me, don't know what that is, Here's a picture:
So they taste like doughnuts, but they're long and skinny and you dip them in chocolate. To make them you make the dough and deep fry them. You're supposed to put it through a piping bag but we didn't have one, so ours didn't look anything like these ones, but they tasted good anyway.
So we had to use heaps of oil because they had to not touch the bottom of the pan, and at the end we had heaps of hot oil left (mistake # 1, we didn't tur down the oil when it was hot enough), and Jon wanted to know what would happen if we just fryed a water and flour mix (mistake #2... probably the main mistake). So he made some and threw it in the pan. I was on the other side of the room doing some research at the table, and the others were watching the frying process. Ivan noticed that the dough was expanding, so he says "that one's going to blow!", then (mistake #3) they all leaned in.
It explodes.
Flinging boiling oil across the room. Ivan was alert, so he was able to jump out of the way, or duck or something, I don't really remember. Jon was standing behind Emilia, and I was far enough away, but Em took the blast full in the face. She managed to throw her hand up infront of her face, thank God, so it gets her mostly in the hand.
She went into shock straight away. She said she was feeling that it was burnt, but she couldn't feel most of the pain. The pain in her hand was so intense, that she didn't even notice her face. She screamed so loud, I've never heard anything like it. Jon and I managed to get her into the shower, because that was the only way we could think of getting her face under the water. Then we tried to convince her to let us take her to hospital, which was hard because she wasn't feeling all the pain. I consulted the first aid book about assessing burns and it said that anything to do with the face must be seen to immediately.
So I called A and E and they said to bring her in, but of course we have to walk, so we soak 4 teatowels and take a big bottle of water and set off keeping ehr hand completely wrapped and her face covered. We looked really silly, with her all wrapped and me stopping every 5 mins to pour water all over her. Not to mention it's freezing.
So the results?
This is not Em, it's just a picture I found and painted. The red bits are the burns. As you can see, the face is relatively unscathed. Or more so than it could have been, considering. But as you look at the hand, please remember that her hand has been classed as second degree:
She curled her fingers over and put it over her face. The thumb is where most of the oil went, and up her wrist.
Now, a week later, her face is almost back to normal. They told her that it would take about 6 months, but it's just red marks now, kinda like the beginnings of pimples. Her hand is still pretty intense. Apparently it will take a year and a half to fully heal, and it will burn at even the slightest hint of sun. She still has a cloth thingy to put on when she goes outside, but mostly she leaves it uncovered, she's not in pain any more, but it took a while.
She didn't even cry. If it was me I'd have been in tears the whole time. She's pretty brave.
Anyway, I don't have much else to say. Ivan needs the 'net for his essays, so I'll update some more later. Probably much later, so don't get excited.
Ciao
