"Time's up. Collect your answer sheet to the front desk."
The invigilator announced, and all the students inside the math class let out a frustrated groan.
Correction. Almost all the student.
Because apparently, there was one student who didn't join the protest chorus of the class. He was too busy sleeping, with his head hidden in his folded arms on his desk. He even didn't noticed, that there was a great commotion happening around him, as the entire class half-heartedly dragged their feet forward to collect their answer sheet on the front desk as instructed by their invigilator.
"Oh-chan," Aiba Masaki hissed from behind him. "Oh-chan, wake up! The exam is over!"
Ohno Satoshi raised his head in surprise, and reflexively glanced around the room, while wiping the remaining drools on his cheek.
He was still collecting his consciousness, when he heard Matsumoto Jun hissed from his right side, "Your answer sheet. Collect it, quick!"
Then Satoshi remembered all at once, that he was in the middle of the final exam in their math class. He quickly stood up from his chair, grabbed his answer sheet, and rushed forward, tripped by his own feet and stuttered on his way to the front desk, where their invigilator watched him with her piercing eyes.
"You shouldn't sleep in the middle of the exam," she scolded him in a cold tone.
"I-- I'm sorry."
Someone snorted behind Satoshi, then a familiar voice spoke up, "Don't worry, Julie-san. Though he always sleeps in our classes, no one seems to be able to take his place as the first rank in our campus."
It was Ninomiya Kazunari. Julie-san shifted his fierce gaze towards the younger boy, but he just smirked. He made a salute sign towards Satoshi, then walked outside the classroom. Jun and Masaki followed behind him.
"See you at the cafetaria," Masaki patted Satoshi's shoulder lightly before leaving.
Satoshi went back to his desk to collect his belongings before soon went to catch up with the other three. The class was almost empty now. There were only Satoshi and one other boy left there.
A boy, who's recently--with a reason that Satoshi himself didn't quite understand--had seized his attention. Sakurai Sho, the class' nerd.
Satoshi kept his eyes on Sakurai while he packed his belongings, and he noticed, that Sakurai was now busy reading a very thick book.
"An English dictionary?" Satoshi frowned, unconsciously thinking out loud, making Sho raised his head from his book to stare at him.
"Ah, sorry, I didn't mean to disturb you."
Sakurai didn't answer. He just sat there, watching Satoshi with his usual cold gaze through his pair of thick glasses.
Satoshi moved to an empty seat opposite to Sakurai. "Don't you think your brain need a break for a while?" he continued, because it seemed that his classmate would never respond to his previous words, "I mean, we have just had an exam--one of the hardest ever, if I could say. And now you're studying again...?"
Sakurai kept silence for a while, staring straight into Satoshi's eyes, before then began to speak, "Well, for your information, unlike you who's born genius, I need to study hard--very hard--if I want to keep my second grade position in this campus safe."
Satoshi raised his brows. "And why is that...?"
"Huh?"
"Why do you want to keep your second grade position safe?"
"I--" Sho opened his mouth, but then closed it again, suddenly looked extremely annoyed, "Yappari, it's useless to talk with a person like you."
Satoshi tilted his head in confusion. "Pardon me?"
"I said it's no use to talk about this kind of thing with someone like you. You won't understand."
Satoshi shifted closer towards Sakurai, who jerked backwards, preventing any possible physical contacts with Satoshi. "Then explain to me. I'm sure I will understand if you do so."
Sakurai stared at him with disbelief, and something like hatred in his eyes. He kept silent for a moment, before then decided to answer.
"Because," he said, his teeth gritted, "No mater how hard I try, I would never be able to take your place as number one. So all I can do is keeping my second position."
There was a bitter tone in Sakurai's voice, and Satoshi realized it. But he didn't know how to respond to the younger's words. And as he was still busy thinking about some other topics to melt the awkward situation, Sakurai had already done packing his belongings, and dashed towards the exit.
"W--wait!" Satoshi called. Sho turned and gave hime a 'what now?' look.
"I..." Satoshi bit his lower lip, "I still haven't understand why do you want to be the number one so bad, but... If you study hard enough, I think you'll be able to beat me one day, so..."
Sakurai let out a tired sigh. "You're using more than half of the time given in our final exam to sleep, while I was squeezing my brain hard to solve the problems until the last second. And you said that I can beat you?"
"W--well, who knows? Nothing is impossible in this world, right? Besides, I... I didn't sleep back then, you know."
The younger boy scoffed, "Then what were you doing? Dancing? Singing?"
"I-- I was..." Satoshi tried to find a good reason, "I was thinking too, you know. Thinking very hard to find the answer for the question number six! Yes, that's it."
"Very funny, genius boy. There were only five questions earlier."
"N--no," Satoshi insisted, "There were six of them."
"Liar."
"W--well, if you don't believe me, why don't you go and ask Julie-san yourself? The sixth question is a bonus question. It's really difficult. But if we can answer it, we will certainly get an A."
Satoshi could see, that Sakurai's expression slowly changed, from annoyed to anxious.
"Are you sure?" he asked, moving a little bit closer to Satoshi, who nodded hesitantly.
"Oh, crap!" Sakurai's eyes rounded from panic, and he dashed out of the classroom in an instance.
Satoshi was a hundred percent sure, his classmate was now on his way to find Julie-san, to confirm about the sixth question, which he knew exactly was never exist.
Yes, Satoshi had told a lie.
A wave of guilt swept his stomach. He felt bad for lying to Sakurai like that, but he could do nothing to take it back now.
*
Nino laughed very loud when Satoshi told his friends about what happened between him and Sakurai inside the empty math class earlier.
"Nino, will you shut up? People are starting to look at us," Jun scolded.
"Sorry," Nino said, still giggled, "This is just too damn funny, Jun. I can't--" he laughed again.
Jun glared at him, but then decided to ignore his excited friend, and shifted his attention back to Satoshi.
"You shouldn't have done that to him," Jun commented, "Sakurai has already hold a grudge towards you in the first place. Doing this kind of thing to him will just make him hate you more."
"I know, but..." Satoshi shook his head, "I still don't understand why he hates me."
"Because you can be on the top of our campus' rank without doing any efforts," Masaki answered, "He's jealous of you."
"But-- why? I mean, I never ask to be on top. I--"
"That's it," Jun cut Satoshi short, "Because you never ask to be on top. Sakurai Sho is the son of an honored family who owns our campus. His father is a politician, and his mother is the head lecture here in our campus. Growing in such a high-class family, I won't be surprised if he's expected to be as brilliant as his parents. Well, he used to be the number one student from kindergarten till high school. But then he entered university and he met you. And everything changed."
"You, who never ask to be on top. You, who never bother to study--who don't need to study at all to get the highest scores. It surely pisses him off, who had studied that hard, but still can't win from you. Yeah, if I were him, I'll feel the same about you," Jun grinned.
Now he understood. Satoshi had just realized that he was too nonchalant, that he couldn't understand even the most obvious reason.
"I... can yield purposedly if he really wants to win from me. I will do it with pleasure, if that can make him doesn't hate me anymore."
Masaki shook his head. "You like him, don't you? If you do so, he'll hate you even more. So don't."
"So what should I do, then?"
"How about go and apologize to him? For lying to him earlier," Jun smiled to him.
"And confess to him too, maybe?" Masaki tried to wink at him, but failed, because that boy couldn't really wink.
"Don't wink if you can't," Nino mocked.
"Oh, shut up!"
Then they burst out laughing.
*
Satoshi didn't need to go and searched for Sakurai. The boy himself ran towards him when he saw Satoshi and his gank walked passed the library. His lips were in full pout, and there was rage in his eyes, as Sakurai walked fast approaching Satoshi.
"Uh-oh," Nino said, "We'd better go, boys."
Jun squeezed his shoulder and Masaki murmured a good luck to him, before then leaving Satoshi alone with Sakurai.
"You're a liar!" Sakurai started to burst out. "I've met Julie-san, and the sixth question doesn't exist! You've made me ashamed!"
"Look, Sho-kun, I--"
"It's Sakurai!"
"Listen--" Satoshi ignored Sakurai's protest, glancing around worriedly, afraid if there were people watching them fighting. However, fortunately, the area around the campus library was already deserted, "Sho-kun, I'm sorry, okay? I didn't mean to lie to you. I'm just--"
"You must think that I'm very funny, huh? For easily believing your lie. And very stupid too."
"No," Satoshi shook his head desperately. "I really didn't mean it. That's why I'm here now, asking for your apology."
"Whatever. I won't forgive you. And from now on, please don't talk to me again. Bye!"
Sakurai walked passed Satoshi, wanted to get away from the older as soon as possible, so he could calm himself down again, but Satoshi's grasp on his wrist prevented him to do so.
"Let me go!" he tried to jerk his hand free, but to his surprise, Satoshi's grip was very strong. "Ohno-kun, let me go!"
Suddenly, Satoshi dragged him closer, and before he knew it, Sakurai felt the older boy's lips had already on his.
For a moment, he froze, before then pulling back forcefully, coughing and brushing his lips with the back of his right hand.
"What did you do?! Are you crazy?!" Sakurai screamed hysterically, pulling his hand with full force in his attempt to get away from Satoshi. However, he then stopped, when Satoshi's sad expression was caught by his sight.
"Why won't you listen to me?" the older said, pouting. "Do you hate me that much? I just want to apologize and explain the true situation to you. So please, for this once, listen to me."
"I--" Sakurai bit his lower lip, averted his gaze from his classmate.
"Look," Satoshi started. He finally let go of Sakurai's wrist, knowing that his classmate wouldn't run away anymore. "Maybe your parents expect you to be the best student here. That's why you study that hard. But, if after studying that hard you still can't beat my scores, then don't blame me. Everyone has their own limit. I think you've done great enough in protecting your rank now. So be proud of it. And the fact that I was born genius, it's not my fault, okay? I never choose to be genius. So please, don't hate me just because of that."
Silence lingered on the air, as Sakurai tried to digest Satoshi's words. Then he slowly nodded, signing that he understood.
"Next," Satoshi continued. He started to consider Masaki's suggestion about confessing to Sakurai. "About the sixth question... I'm not lying, you know."
"Eh?"
"The sixth question really does exist," Satoshi repeated, "And it's very difficult. No mater how hard I squeezed my brain, I can't find the answer. But I think if it's you, you will be able to answer it quiet easily--... No. Actually, you're the only one who can answer that question correctly."
Sakurai stared at Satoshi with eyes full of question. "What kind of question is that?"
"Hmm..." Satoshi bit his lower lip, "The sixth question is like this: 'If Ohno Satoshi says that he loves Sakurai Sho, and asks him to go out for a date next Saturday, will he say yes'?"
It needed a few seconds until Sakurai respond.
"WHAT?" the younger boy stood there, mortified, with his mouth hanging open in surprise.
Satoshi nodded. His cheeks had already turned pink.
"I--" Sakurai felt his cheeks suddenly burnt as it turned as red as his shirt.
"Like I said before, your brain needs a break too. So I think a short refreshing to a cinema with me won't hurt, ...?"
"Well, Ohno-kun--"
"Satoshi. Just call me Satoshi."
"Satoshi-kun," Sakurai agreed, averted his gaze to hide the fact that he was pretty shy now, to suddenly hear a love confession from the boy he used to hate the most like that, "I don't know... I... Well, you know, I'm not a nice boy. I'm selfish, and I get angry easily. And picky too. And boring. And--"
"Enough," Satoshi cut Sakurai short, "Don't give me spoiler more than that. Just give me a chance to find out more about you myself, will you?"
"Well, I..." Sakurai scratched the back of his head awkwardly, "I have to check on my schedule first... You know, cram school and stuffs..."
"Does that mean that I can take it as a 'yes'?"
"Mm..." Sakurai nodded, and Satoshi grinned wide victoriously.
"Great! And now... Shall we go home together?"
The younger nodded again, and Satoshi quickly grabbed Sakurai's hand, dragging him towards the campus' exit. He felt Sakurai was trying to free his hand from his grip, but of course Satoshi would never let that happened. His fingers now entangled Sakurai's, making the younger blushed again.
From tomorrow on, the school days would felt much more fun for Sakurai, because now he had Satoshi by his side. Not as his rival. But as his lover.
