“…You see, Murakami-san. The psychiatrist said that psychopaths are often, but not always, appear charming, attractive, and calm. I was shocked to… to find him… Oh God…”
“Yes, Ma’am. I have heard of them. Thank you for your story today. Now, Ma’am, since the police had started to search for the culprit, do you have any hope for--”
“Eeh! Masaki, why did you turn it off?!” Sho protested and pouted.
“Come on, Sho-chan! It’s been a long while since we can meet up like this! Don’t ruin our reunion with such a heavy stuff!!!”
“But it’s that famous Beyond the Locked Door-Murakami Shingo’s radio show! He’s a daring and talented presenter, you know!! You’ll hear surprising remarks from him!”
“But he’s spreading salt over the guests’ wounds, Sho-chan!! I’ve listened to his show several times, and he’s rude sometimes, and I hate it. Moreover this time, he’s talking to a mother of a victim of mutilation. This makes me sick.”
“But Masaki, who knows that he might have some advice for us to be more cautious? The culprit of this serial murder and mutilation doesn’t have any range or specific criteria for his targets! The old lady in Kamakura. The young boy in Akihabara. The pregnant woman in Saint Mary Hospital. The waiter in a club in Ginza. The fisherman in Okinawa. We should be careful! Moreover we… You are a model, and I’m a newscaster. We’re public figures.”
“Sho-chan. Come on. You’re tired.”
Sho sighed and decided to shut up and just looked outside the car window. Unlike Masaki who was fearless and calm, he was worried, really worried that something might happen to them. He just had a bad feeling that night. A very bad one.
**
It was 2 p.m when they finally yawned widely between their conversations. Since Masaki’s bed was a single bed, he gave it to Sho and just simply slept on the couch. With a short ‘oyasumi’, they slowly drifted off to sleep. After a long time, they could finally sleep without worrying about their schedule for the next day.
It was 4 p.m. when Sho woke up because he suddenly felt thirsty. He walked slowly to the kitchen as to not wake Masaki up.
It startled him and woke him up fully when he heard a rustling voice coming from a small room under the stairs. Something inside the small room was crumbling, or falling apart.
“Masaki, someone’s here,” he whispered, eyes still eyeing the door of the small room. “Under the stair.”
No response.
“Masaki, please, wake. Up. Now,” he hissed, slowly walking back to take anything as a weapon, and dropped his choice on an umbrella.
“Masaki!”
Hearing no response from the model, he decided to gather his courage to walk slowly to the stair, taking his phone from his pocket to be used as a flashlight. “Please come help me, soon, okay? You hear me, Masaki?!”
He took a deep breath and charged when he was only a meter away from the stair.
“So he didn’t tell you not to go near the stairs, Sakurai-san?” a panting voice was heard from his back, and Sho froze. His feet was rooted to the ground, and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t turn either his head or body to face the owner of the voice.
The familiar, yet different voice.
He gulped and stiffened as he felt a pair of hands holding him from behind and something thin and cold touched his neck.
“Masaki…?”
“No~ He’s asleep. It’s night time for him. And this is my morning.”
“Who are--”
“Bye bye~…”
The last thing he could remember was the feel of his own flesh ripping, and warm liquid flowing on his neck. He was thrown forward with his head hitting the small door. He grabbed the handle and pulled it with his last strength, and the last thing he saw with his blurry visions was skulls and bones. Falling, rolling creepily beside him.
“Wh-why…?”
Someone, someone had just turned the lights on. He raised his head slowly, only to see Masaki-clearly his childhood friend Aiba Masaki with whom he aimed for their dreams together-there, struggling alone, voices and faces changing rapidly.
“You’ve been found out!!! Why did you do that?!!”
“Shut up, Masaki!! I need this!!!”
“Kazu!!! Didn’t I tell you to stop killing?!! Oh gosh, stop fighting, you two!!! Please shut up!!”
“You shut up, old man Satoshi!!!”
“Kazu, please!!!”
“You too, Masaki!! Shut the hell up!! Let me finish him!!”
“Kazu!!!”
“Heey Masaki, Satoshi!! -Okay, they’re asleep now, Kazu. Come on, isn’t this going to be a great news?”
“Jun!”
“Come on, let’s do it. I’ll have great sources for Murakami-kun’s show tomorrow!”
Sho tried to do something but his own life was also starting to leave him. He was dying. This was the bad feeling he had earlier, but he didn’t think he would die in Masaki’s hand.
He called the police with his last strength. If he managed to call them, then this, sure, would be a great news...
