❝It’s London, the year is 1899, and the luxurious Himmelsport floating mini-city for the rich and famous has not long been launched into the skies above the city (though slightly to one side, of course, since the nobility living up there don’t care for drifting through smoke and pollution). The past decade has seen steam-powered technology dash ahead in leaps and bounds, and now all sorts of wondrous things are possible-- provided you can pay for them. The British empire is still thriving; exotic goods turn up from the Orient almost every day, it seems. London has become a cultural melting-pot filled with new arrivals from all parts of the world - some legal, most not, all of them looking for...something. Something they thought they could find only here.
Most of them have been disappointed, because despite the apparent technological wealth of the city, London is still only a paradise for the privileged. There is a near-insurmountable gap between the rich and the poor, and life in the worse areas is almost unbelievably harsh. Still, it’s not all bad. Many of London’s poorer inhabitants still lead fine lives. Life is, as always, what you make of it.
