Been playing Shin Megami: Devil Summoner for DS. So far it is a great game, at least by DS standards. I suppose it is good by any game system standards, but it is great by DS standards.
Devil Summoner has some of the same game play functions as the other Shin Megami games, same monsters, same spells, same fusion ability, and it is still turn-based fights. The big difference in this game then others is now they added an element of turn-based strategy game to the mix. It seems to add a lot to the game.
The game plays mostly like a strategy game, like that of fft. When you start a fight the game switches to a turn-based RPG, each player/monster gets to attack once (twice if they get an extra turn) then it goes back to strategy. It is really a simple concept but it works out great for this game.
The story takes place in Japan, as most Shin Megami/persona games do, more specifically it takes place inside the Yamanote circle. After some explosion and a gas leak the area gets locked down by some army force. And it seems that unless you do something everyone there will die in 7 days.
I have played up to 3 or 4 days so far and I still can't make heads or tails about what the hell is going on. You would think after 3 days the people in Japan would be a little pissed off that the government can't fix a gas leak, or in the very least suspicious that they haven't done shit to fix it. Anyways, while in the lock down people discover they can use DSs to summon demons (ds are called comps in the game). Then the shit really hits the fan.
To me the comps are just a plot device, they couldn't figure out a reason for teenage kids being able to control demons so they just came up with they are summoned threw a program in a DS. The comps seem to be an easy exit plan for most of the reasons things are going on in the story.
Demons going on a rampage? Must be because demons killed there owner when they first got there comp. More demons and stronger demons from the day before? Well turns out the demons learned how to use the comps themselves. The area is on lock down? Must be because the comps. Everyone is going to die in seven days? I'm sure the comps have something to do with it.
