Ville was quiet, his head leaning against Linde’s shoulder as the other man’s hands danced lightly over the strings on his old guitar. Soft, soothing notes. Linde closed his eyes. His heart was full and warm, alone as he was with his music and his best friend. Chords formed familiar patterns, then danced away again. The melody of ‘Close to the flame’ drifted in his mind.
A light shiver ran through him on the moment Ville began singing softly.
Sweetest. Kindest.
You are to me. In this cold world. I’d be for you, too. A small, slightly sad smile lingered on Linde’s lips.
The last chords floated away into the night air, and for a moment he stopped playing. Ville sighed. Linde’s mind jumped back in time, when they’d sat alone in Ville’s room, guitars on their laps, waiting for inspiration to hit them. Or rather, waiting for Linde to help Ville’s inspiration to hit him.
Without consciously doing so, his fingers had found the strings again.
“Your love… is the only thing… I live for in this world…”
He could sense Ville’s amused smile, and when Linde stopped singing the other’s voice took over. “Oh how I wait for the day your heart burns… in these heavenly flames…”
Linde joined him again. “…I have already scorched in… I just want you to know, I’ll always be waiting...”
Not true, Linde thought. I’m not waiting for you, and neither are you for me.
“So long ago…” Ville whispered with a smile as Linde’s hands fell motionless against the instrument.
“And here we are again,” Linde whispered in return. “In these heavenly flames…”
“Scorched every day…”
Linde could almost hear the path Ville thoughts took on that moment - lovers far away, lovers forever lost. But a moment later they both smiled into the darkness, and when Linde put his guitar aside, Ville slipped his arms around the guitarist’s thin waist. “I love you, Lily.”
“I love you too, Ville.”
They sat like that for a long time, hands clasped together against the increasing cold, heads leaned against each other.
Your Lily will love you forever.
