Review: When Marnie Was There

Jul 01, 2015 00:08

This is one of Studio Ghibli's weirdest movies. Through most of it, I didn't know what I was watching, or how the story would turn out. This was ultimately a good thing. The movie as a whole was very emotional but subtle, and I found myself really identifying with the main character, Anna, on many levels. Wait for the credits song for a big emotional whammy.

This movie was one of those rare gems, like Song of the Sea. But it's not for everyone, which is why it went through theaters so quickly. I'm glad I was able to catch it at the end of its lifetime. As far as the mature Studio Ghibli movies go, this one is my favorite one yet. I hope they make more even in spite of the rumors that they're closing. They're masters of their craft, they should continue sharing their amazing gift with the rest of the world.
