This being the first year that we've started from seed on such a large scale, and the new climate, it's been tough to let go.
So much time and effort is put into ensuring that starts have the perfect environment to begin their lives healthy and strong. We eat our meals next to them, watching them germinate and worrying about every little detail.
And then, the time comes, deducing from the back of a seed packet, books, the local extension office or neighbors, to harden them off and put the starts in the garden. From that point on they aren't under your nose every day. You don't directly control the sunlight they get or the water they drink. They are no longer protected from wind, temperature and precipitation.
The weather this week has been a whirlwind. Saturday evening (the day of planting) it snowed, although it didn't stick. Monday morning, we woke to a 1/2 inch of snow. The wind is something fierce too 15-20 mph.
I try and remind myself that I am simply a cog in creation and that by patience and observation much can be learned about the ways different species react and survive. Control over the process is a haughty notion and a facade; we are blessed to have been given this opportunity to learn so much in out little haven.
