Today, I was in a meeting with the literary magazine's art staff. The deadline for submissions was this Friday, so we had a lot of stuff in from art students and people who have gone abroad with cameras. Most of the entries were photos, which seemed a bit sad, as there are tons of painting people (ahem) and sculpture people in the art department with really nice work.
Among the art entries were pencil drawings of anime characters. I looked at them long and hard, as did the rest of the the art staff (all four of us), and we came to this conclusion: anime drawings aren't automatically bad, not really. They were certainly better than the entries that came in with words and scribbles written all over computer paper. These anime drawings, though, were a) in pencil, and very obviously No. 2 non-art pencil, at that, b) not inked, and c) not finished. The person who sent them in is probably one of the first years who I see at dinner times, congregating together and happily debating pirates vs. ninjas. They seem like nice folk, and I have talked to a few of them in the past, though none of us have really hit it off.
Looking at those drawings, I felt disheartened. I thought of
weather,
anime,
fandom
