Today in reading The Hunger Games again, I was reminded of something that happened midsemester in fall of last year. I was in my lasers class and we were learning about laser hair removal. Naturally, the subject turned to the double-standards of beauty for men and women. The class was a total boys club; myself and one friend of mine comprised the entire female population of the class. The men of the class, in hearing this lecture, were appalled at the pain and expense that women will go to to remove excess body hair and to look "attractive" for men. "Why don't they just leave it alone?" they asked. "It's not that important at all." It was heartwarming, to say the least.
After this beautiful discussion in support of women's' rights conducted entirely by men had concluded, the part of the lecture came wherein the professor showed a video of a laser hair removal procedure in progress. Naturally, this involved showing a woman having hair removed from her upper lip. To my dismay, the room immediately descended into insults of the woman's appearance and sardonic discussions about how sexy her "moustache" was. The whole discussion had been immediately forgotten. My friend and I looked at each other, deciding whether or not it was worth the trouble to call them out on their idiocy. Unfortunately, in our experience with the men of the class, we decided silently that it was not.
There was no moral to that story, I just felt the need to share it. I also feel the need to share the fact that it seems as though some great creature in the sky just decided to pour an enormous bucket of water on my house.
I got the news today that one of my elder relatives passed away this morning. I think technically she was my great aunt. It's weird to think of her in the past tense. I didn't know her well, though I have met her on several occasions in the past. She was a sweet lady, and will be missed. I hope to god I don't have to go to the funeral. I hate funerals so much.
