Concerning donations for Katrina victims and members in the effected areas, Sb posted to the TB list, "For legal reasons, we can't do this through OTO corporate or Local Body accounts. We'll need an individual member, preferrably someone with a PayPal account, to set up a private fund that can be publicized."

I assume this has something to do with non-profit religious status etc but can someone explain to me why the Unitarian Church (or the Methodist Church down the street) can legally collect funds when they exist under the same tax codes but the OTO can't?
