Charming and Crafty: Witchcraft and Paganism in Contemporary Media
May 18-21, 2006
Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts
Keynote Speaker: Stephen Mitchell, Chair, Folklore and Mythology,
Harvard University
This conference aims to examine representations of Wtchcraft and
Paganism in film, television and other media (1900--present day), and explore a
variety of topics in an interdisciplinary format. Proposals for panels are
welcome; sessions will generally comprise three speakers for twenty minutes
each. Suggested topics include but are not limited to:
Specific film or television series titles (e.g. The Wicker Man, The
Craft, Charmed, etc.)
Graphic novels
Literary fiction
Genre fiction (e.g. teens, horror, TV tie-ins, etc.)
Documentary film
TV journalism
Historical representation and/or revision
Magic
Pagan paths and traditions (e.g. druidry, Wicca, etc.)
Gender and body politics
Satanism and/or the occult
Advertising and ephemera
Popular music
Landscape and location
The conference will include at least one night of film screenings at
the Harvard Film Archive.
200 word abstracts are due October 31, 2005 via email (avoiding
attachments if at all possible). Please put "abstract" in the subject line.
