Guy in class today was seriously arguing that we need a government body to regulate what people say on the internet.

Because, hey, a lot of people say a lot of mean, baseless things out there.

Continuing to include race (and sexuality + gender, National Drug and Health survey) on official forms will do nothing but continue to spread the opinion that those things matter on the large scale. :/ Honestly. Why should a person's race have any impact in how much aid you give them?

I have the same problems with you that I do with the folks in ER. Being blunt can be just as hurtful as speaking specifically to wound. It's the internet.
