The first time he saw her she was walking towards him through the school corridor. She was hugging the wall, staying as far out of the way and as unnoticeable as possible. Her arms clutched her books tightly to her chest and she kept her eyes down, watching her feet. Her hair was loose and flowing over her shoulders, a vibrant streak of blue showing through. Her clothes were plain and non-descript, the blue in her hair the only sign of a rebellious side.

She was new, he hadn’t seen her before. He knew he would have noticed her already. It was like the world slowed down as she moved past him. She was beautiful, why could no one else see that? The jocks, the cheerleaders, everyone was walking straight past her, knocking into her like she was invisible.

He tried to make his way over to her, to say hello, to find out who she was, to ask her name, but the corridor was full and he couldn’t navigate the sea of people surrounding him.
He watched her until she disappeared from view with only one thought in his mind; he had to talk to her.

The next time he had an opportunity to find out who she was, he was at the movie theatre with his mom and dad. As he pushed himself into the queue with his family he noticed a distinctive streak of blue hair towards the front of the line. While he was staring she turned and walked over to the popcorn counter. His eyes widened when he noticed how different her clothes were to what he’d seen her wearing in school. She had fingerless black and white striped gloves on with a short black skirt, knee high striped socks and chunky black sneakers. Her top was a black jacket, covered in zips and showing flashes of bright pink material. She looked amazing. If she dressed like this at school everyone would notice her, she was incredible! Suddenly he had realised that maybe she didn’t want to be noticed. He was about to make his way over to her when his mom appeared behind him and began to turn his chair around to face the disabled ramp that led into the cinema.

“Mom, I just want to talk to someone…” he started to say.

“No Artie, we’ve eaten, you don’t need any popcorn.”

“Mom, I don’t want popcorn, a…a friend is over there and I…”

“Come on Artie, stop fussing. We’ve got a movie to watch,” said his mom, completely oblivious to what he was trying to tell her.

Artie slumped down in his chair, admitting defeat. It was probably best his mom wasn’t there the first time he spoke to her anyway.

The following week he saw her outside the school, making her way towards the entrance. This is it he thought to himself, this is the day I find out her name. He began to push down on his wheels, picking up speed and moving closer towards her. She was dressed in a very unnoticeable way again and he found himself wishing she would be true to herself in school as well as out. There was one difference though; the black and white striped fingerless gloves were covering her hands and arms. He smiled to himself; maybe she was beginning to see the advantage of being true too who she was really was.

He saw his opportunity as she stopped and begun to rummage through her bag. He approached her staying just a step behind before clearing his throat and trying to speak to her.
“Hi, my names Artie and I’ve been watching you...No, no I mean I’ve seen you around school and I realised I hadn’t noticed you before so I guessed you were new, so what I’m trying to say is, uh, hello and maybe we could hang out sometime?”

As he waited she began to walk away slowly, not even turning to look at him. What was going on? She can’t not have heard him! As he watched, trying to figure out what had just happened, she turned and he glimpsed a bright red lead hidden under her hair.

Earphones.

She hadn’t heard a word he’d said.

~~~~~~~~
It was a few weeks before he plucked up the courage to try and speak to her again. Even though she hadn’t been aware of him before he had been so embarrassed. Why was it proving so hard to talk to one person? They even shared some lessons together, which was where he had finally found out her name, but by the time he managed to get out of the classroom and into the corridor she was disappearing from sight.
One day, as he made his way into the lunch room, he was beginning to think that it wasn’t worth it. If they were meant to be friends surely it would have happened by now? It shouldn’t be so hard just to talk to someone!
Dejected he made his way over to the food counter to pick something. He decided on the pasta in mystery sauce (the mystery being how those brave enough to eat it managed to keep it down) and some vanilla ice cream before making his way over to his usual table.
As he began to fork the unusual tasting food into his mouth he looked around the lunch room and there she was, alone, just a few tables away from him.
This is it, he thought, I’m not going to get a better opportunity than this.
He wiped his hand across his mouth, clearing away any of the remaining sauce, and began to make his way over to her table. He was almost there when a jock, some guy with a Mohawk, walked in front of him, blocking his path.
“Uh, excuse me please,” he asked, trying to skirt his way around the guy.
“What was that Wheels? You want me to move? But I like it here, why would I move for you?” the Jock sneered at him, grinning as his friends laughed.
“I just want to get past,” Artie said, feeling himself getting angry. Who did this guy think he was?
“You see Wheels, that’s not how things work around here. You don’t tell me where to go, I tell you. This is high school dude, if I want to keep my rep I can’t let this happen, right guys?”
Artie looked around at the other jocks, all of whom were blocking his view of her now, disbelieving as they all nodded in agreement.
“So here’s how it’s gonna work,” said Mohawk, leaning down with his hands on both arms of his wheelchair, “You’re gonna turn around and leave and I’m gonna high five the guys and let the whole room know what a loser you are, and because of that I won’t add you to my daily slushie list, deal?”
He had no choice. His parents couldn’t afford the dry cleaning costs a daily slushie would mean so he had to leave.
Pushing himself round he began to leave the hall. He felt his face flush as Mohawk and his friends began to woop and holler behind him, celebrating their victory. He just hoped she had already left so she didn’t see him like this.
~~~~~~~~

Just a few days later he saw her standing in front of a notice in the hallway, lifting her pen to the paper briefly before pulling away again. She did this a few times before finally taking a deep breath and writing something down.

The hallway was almost empty, she wasn’t wearing earphones, there were no jocks about. Could this actually be it? Would he finally get his chance to talk to her?

He began to push himself towards her when he heard her phone ring in her bag. She grabbed it and as she began to walk away he heard her say “M..M..Mercedes. I…I..I did it, I s..signed up for G…Glee.”

He saw a smile spread over her face as she began to walk down the hall, talking to her friend. When he got to the notice board he looked up at the piece of paper she had written on.

Glee club.

She was going to be in Glee club.

He could be in Glee club! He liked singing and dancing and he could play the guitar, they couldn’t say no to him.

Excitedly he got a pen out of his bag and wrote his name down on the sheet of paper. Hardly anyone would join Glee club, even the band made fun of them, so he was sure to able to talk to her there.

~~~~~~~~
It was the first rehearsal of Glee club and he was waiting in the gym with a handful of other students. He recognised some of them but there was no one there he had socialised with before. Tina was sitting on one of the benches with Mercedes, deep in what looked like a very important conversation. Maybe he shouldn’t disturb them? Maybe he should wait until she was alone? Maybe…He shook his head. No, this was it. If he didn’t speak to her now he was never going to.
He made his way past Rachel Berry who was preening herself in front of a small compact mirror, past Kurt who was engrossed in a fashion magazine, and finally stopped in front of Tina and Mercedes.
He cleared his throat, his heart leaping when she looked up at him, before saying in a shaking voice, “Hi, I’m Artie,” while extending his hand towards her.
She giggled and a blush began to spread over her cheeks as glanced at Mercedes before holding her hand out to him.
“Hi A…Artie, I’m Tina, It’s n...n…nice to m..meet you.”
He let out a breath he hadn’t known he was holding.
It hadn’t been that bad really.
