scarletshimmer who wanted "Will and Emma's first date, Terri gets in the way!" No beta'd so any mistakes are all mine!
Emma gave herself one last critical glance in her hallway mirror before nervously running a hand through her auburn hair and smoothing down the skirt of her pale green dress.
It had taken her hours to get herself ready for tonight. She’d had a shower, followed by a bath in some beautifully scented bath oils, followed by another shower. She could never understand people that just had baths; it was, after all, washing in your own filth! She shuddered at the thought before concentrating on her appearance again.
Her hair was perfectly styled, with a soft curl around the front of her face, accentuating her features. She had picked the dress to compliment the deep brown of her eyes and the colour of her hair, with a matching handbag finishing the outfit. She was about to go and use her sanitizing wipes one last time when there was a knock at her door.
She jumped and immediately felt her heart beat speeding up and a flush spreading over her chest. Oh God, she couldn’t do this. She couldn’t go out with him. She would make an idiot of herself and he’d realise what a terrible mistake he’d made and then she’d never see him again.
She leant against the wall, trying to control her breathing as it came out in hitching gasps.
“Emma?” she heard Will ask quietly from the other side of the door, “Emma, are you ok?”
“Fine, fine,” she said quickly, “I’m just, uh, finishing up. Won’t be long!” She reached into her bag, pulling out a hand wipe and began vigorously cleaning under her nails before sliding to the floor.
“Emma...I know you’re scared, but don’t be. It’s just a meal in a restaurant. It doesn’t matter what people think, it’s just you and me. I know eating out scares you but I promise you this place is clean. I’ve eaten there dozens of times and I’ve never been ill. I’m not going to hide this relationship. I’m not going to keep having you cook for me. I’m treating you the way you deserve to be treated and that starts with dinner, okay?”
She took a deep breath. He was right, of course he was right. He would never take her anywhere that could hurt her. She trusted him. She got up on her shaking legs and moved towards the door. She gripped the handle, her knuckles white with strain, and over the door.
As she saw him standing in her doorway wearing black pants, a dark blue shirt and a gorgeous smile she relaxed. He always had this effect on her. As soon as she was with him all her worries floated away. He radiated a calm which seeped into her whenever he was near. He stepped through the doorway and wrapped his arms around her while she buried her face in the nook of his shoulder.
“I’m sorry Will, I panicked and I just got so scared and...”
“Shhh,” he whispered gently, “its okay. I know this is scary for you.” He pulled back from her embrace, framing her face with his hands before gently cupping her chin and lifting her face towards him, “We can take it as slow as you need; we’ve got all the time in the world.”
She smiled and lifted herself on to her toes to meet him in a kiss. The feel of his lips on hers sent a shiver down her spine and as he wound his hand through her hair she felt her defences beginning to crumble.
He pulled away first, a grin lighting up his whole face. “We’ve got a table booked; we don’t want to be late, right?”
She laughed as she rearranged her hair, “Okay,” she said, taking one last deep breath before holding on to his hand, “I’m ready.”

They drove in a comfortable silence, happy in each other’s company, as they made their way to the restaurant. She had no idea where they were going because Will had said he wanted to surprise her. Her stomach was doing somersaults and she thought she might be sick but other than that she couldn’t remember ever feeling happier.
It had been many years since she had eaten in a restaurant. The thought of someone else making and handling her food turned her stomach. How could she know they were being hygienic? How could she know they hadn’t spat in her food? She took a deep, soothing breath. She trusted Will. He wouldn’t take her anywhere dirty. He wouldn’t put her in danger.
She turned her thoughts to happier things. This was their first official date and although very anxious, she was also extremely excited. Until now they had kept their relationship secret, with him coming over to hers after school and at the weekends. It was made easier by the fact she didn’t work at the school anymore, she had managed to find a counsellors job elsewhere, but she had still felt like she was doing something wrong by sneaking around with him. She knew it was over between her and Ken and him and Terri, but she had still felt guilty. It had taken a lot of coaxing from Will to persuade her that it was ok, that she had nothing to be ashamed of, and that he wanted to be with her.
He had only seen Terri a few times since he’d found out the truth about the baby. The last time had been when he’d moved the last of his stuff out. He’d told her later that day that she had cried, begged and pleaded with him to stay. That she had promised to change, that she’d said she would never lie to him again and that things would be better. Her heart had been in her throat as he had recounted the tale and before he finished she had managed to convince herself that he was going back to her. She should have known better though, all it had done was show him that he had done the right thing by leaving.
She felt the car slowing down and looked up to see they had parked outside a gorgeous little bistro. There were candles flickering in the windows and she could see just a few people sitting inside. It was the most romantic looking restaurant she had ever seen.
“Oh Will, it’s beautiful!” she exclaimed, “How did you find this place?”
“It’s owned by a couple I went to high school with. I’ve been here a few times over the years.”
“Did you...did you come here with Terri?” she asked nervously.
He turned in his seat and took both her hands in his. “Yes I did, but it doesn’t matter. Trust me Em, I won’t be thinking about her. I only see you.”
She smiled and felt her shoulders relax as he sent another dazzling smile her way. He climbed out of the car and made his way over to her side, holding the door open for her as she stepped onto the pavement. He then closed and locked the car before taking her hand in his and leading her to the small wooden door that led into the dimly lit restaurant.
As she stepped over the threshold she gasped. It was more gorgeous than she ever could have imagined. The floor was highly polished, reflecting the gentle light given off by the tea lights that decorated each of the six tables. There were three tables to each side of her, all of which had two chairs decorated with cream satin bows and soft and luxurious looking cushions. On each table was a single rose in a tall, slim vase with a few petals decorating the white table cloth. She followed Will as he made his way down the natural pathway through the middle of the tables towards the modest bar which was located at the back of the restaurant. Behind the candle covered bar she could see a petite woman with short dark hair and a large welcoming smile on her face.
“Will! It’s so good to see you!” she exclaimed, coming out from behind the bar.
“Hi Alice,” he said, leaning forward and kissing her on the cheek before turning to Emma and saying, “Alice, this is Emma. Emma this is my good friend Alice.”
“Emma, it’s wonderful to meet you,” Alice said, coming forward to embrace her.
Before she had time to think she found herself taking a step back, raising her hands protectively in front of herself.
Alice stopped in her tracks and gave her a quizzical look. Emma felt her cheeks flaming and threw a desperate look at Will.
“It’s alright Em. Alice, Emma has some issues with personal space. Don’t take it to heart; she just needs to get to know you first, right Em?”
She nodded vigoursly, “Yes, yes of course. It’s just a thing I have, I...I try and control it but sometimes it gets the better of me.”
“Don’t worry, we all have our little eccentricities right?” Alice laughed before making her way back behind the bar. “Now, what can I get you two?”
~~~~~~~~
Two hours later she was full to bursting and, she thought, a little bit drunk. The food had been wonderful. Andrew, Alice’s husband, was an accomplished chef. Will has assured her the food would be cooked to perfection and it was. She thought maybe he had spoken to Andrew about her food habits before tonight as he had been particularly conscientious, but maybe he was always like that.
Even though they were both beyond full they had ordered a piece of the triple chocolate cake to share. Will held her hand across the table and she sighed happily, losing herself in his soft brown eyes.
He rubbed the back of her hand gently with his thumb, “You okay?”
“Yes Will. I’ve not felt this happy and relaxed in, well, forever. I don’t have to hide with you, I can just be myself and you accept me. I’ve not felt this...safe with any man before.”
“I’ll always protect you Em, I promise.”
As he finished speaking Andrew came out with the most delicious looking cake she had ever seen. She could see brownie pieces in the base and it was covered in thick cream which was running down the edges. As Andrew placed it between them she felt her eyes widen. There was a lot of cake. She raised her eyes to Will and saw he was looking at the cake with something akin to fear too. As he noticed her watching him they both started laughing and grabbed their forks.
“Wait, I want to try something,” said Will, taking her fork from her hands. Using his fork he cut a large chunk of cake and held it out to her. “Is this okay?” he asked. She didn’t even have to think about it and found herself giggling as she closed her eyes and waited to feel the chocolate on her tongue.
As she waited, her mouth open, she heard the restaurant door open. She continued to wait patiently until she heard Will whisper, “Terri.”
She whipped round in her chair, her eyes wide as she saw Terri standing in the doorway staring at Will.
To make matters worse she wasn’t alone. Ken stood next to her looking just as shocked as she felt.
Immediately she was sober. Oh God, oh God, oh God, she thought. This isn’t happening. It can’t be happening. She looked to Will for support but he was still staring at Terri, a mixture of emotions crossing his face, before his eyes snapped back to hers.
“Em, I’m so sorry. I had no idea they were going to be here...I had no idea there was a them. I mean, Terri and Ken?” he reached over and took her hands in his. “Don’t worry okay?”
She nodded grimly and gripped his hands tight as Terri abandoned Ken and stalked towards them. She stopped next to their table and glared at Emma before turning a magnificent smile to Will.
“Will! What a lovely surprise! Isn’t it funny we’ve both brought dates to our restaurant?”
She felt her heart plummet. Their restaurant? He said they’d come here together but he hadn’t told her it had been a special place. She pulled her hands out from his grip and laid them in her lap, twisting her fingers together nervously. Will glanced at her quickly, hurt showing in his eyes, before turning his attention back to Terri.
“Hi Emster,” said Ken softly behind her.
“Hi...Hi Ken,” she stuttered, unable to look him in the eye. “How um, how are you?”
“Good. I’m good. No actually I’m great. Never better,” Ken said, his eyes shifting to Terri.
“That’s great Ken. I’m really pleased for you,” she said. She had no bad feelings towards him, he had never done anything to hurt her and she really did want him to be happy.
She turned her eyes back to Will. Terrie was leaning over the table, exposing as much of her chest to him as possible, pouting and twirling her hair in her fingers. To her relief he looked extremely uncomfortable and was leaning back as far as he could in his chair. Ken saw what was happening and touched Terri lightly on the elbow.
She shot him a hard look, “Ken! What did I say about touching? I am in an emotionally unstable condition and I will not have you taking advantage of me.” She turned back to Will, “Now where were we?”
Emma couldn’t help but blush when he looked over at her before saying, “Well we were just enjoying our dessert and I suppose you two have a table booked so don’t keep Andrew and Alice waiting any longer.”
“But, but,” Terrie huffed, clearly taken aback. Her eyes darted from his face to hers. “Fine. Have your precious dessert with your little freak. I know you’ll be back Will. I know what you need and I know she can’t satisfy you. She’ll never satisfy you the way I did.” She turned to Ken, “Come on then, let’s get this over with.”
Emma watched her walk to the other side of the tiny restaurant, Ken following behind like a dog, before turning back to Will. Tears streamed down her cheeks. Terri was right; she would never be able to give him what he needed.
“Why did you bring me here?” she asked. “Why did you bring me to a place you came to with her?”
Will came round to her, kneeling down in front of her and wiping the tears from under her eyes gently.
“Em, we only came here a handful of time together. We hardly ever went out to eat. Terri spent all our money at Pottery Barn, we couldn’t afford to do things like this. I told you I wouldn’t be thinking about her and I wasn’t. I don’t want her to poison anything we have.”
“She’s right though Will, I can’t give you what she did. I want too, but I’m never going to be like her. I just can’t do it.”
“Emma, I don’t want you to be like her! There was a time I loved Terri. She was sweet and honest and saw the best in people. She saw the best in me. Now she just wants to mould me and make me, in her opinion, better. That’s not love Emma. That’s not what you do to someone you care about.”
She sniffed and daintily wiped her nose with a tissue before pulling a plastic bag out of her handbag and putting the used tissue inside.
“So,” she said, composing herself. “How did she know we were here?”
Will sighed heavily, “Ken must have overheard me mention it at school. He probably doesn’t even realise Terri is using him for information. I bet everything I say gets back to her and he thinks she actually likes him. She doesn’t like anyone, not even me. She just can’t bear the thought of anyone else having me.”
“I don’t want to have to fight to keep you Will,” she said sadly.
“You’ll never have too,” he said standing up and offering her his hand.
He took some notes out of his wallet and left them on the table. Hand in hand they made their way towards the door, having to walk past Terri and Ken on the way. Terri gave her a look to kill, but all she saw was Ken’s face, lined with sadness and regret.
“Have a lovely evening,” said Terri sarcastically.
Will turned round, a knowing smile on his face, before saying “Oh don’t worry Terri, we will.”
She couldn’t help but giggle as they made their way to his car. He wrapped his arms around her before placing a light kiss on her forehead.
“Thank you Will,” she said. “For everything.”
“Mmm, well I could have done without the interruption, but yeah, pretty good first date huh?”
“Yes,” she said with meaning, “best first date ever.”
