Some of my orders have been trickling in. I took advantage of a 10% coupon to www.gardeners.com and ordered a copper trellis (for next year), a hand cultivater with an extender, more garden fabric for next season and 2 pairs of
Atlas gloves for $14.00. I read some pretty good reviews on them. Latex palm and breathable back plus very inexpensive (esp compared to my bionic gloves for $30.
No comparison. The bionics are an amazing fit and super comfortable. Ideal when using power tools like a tiller or even doing some heavy digging (I'm thinking snow here). The Atlas don't fit me very well. They don't fit hands that are long and thin so they feel awkward for me to wear. At least they were inexpensive and I don't feel as bad digging in dirt with them.
My order from TheGarlicStore.com finally came in! I have 3 squares that I need to prepare to start planting them. 4 squares if I dig up the cantelope seedling that survived the monstruous red pear tomato plant. So that's either 16 softnecks or 36 hardnecks but I'll do a combination of both. I still have an order from SeedsofChange.com coming, hardneck Spanish Roja. I'm still thinking of planting some of my Whole Foods organic garlic, if anything for comparison. I know these are all softnecks.
My fall crop of radishes and carrots are coming along. None of my Fall spinach are surviving the sow bugs. Not sure what to do. I know we can definitely eat spinach. I have enough seeds I think to keep planting.
Anytime the night temps drops below 50F (like tonight), I've been covering most of the pepper plants. There's still a bunch of fruit I'm trying to protect and help before the first frost. Which is usually towards the end of October for here. As difficult as it is, I may force myself to pull out more plants on Sunday, after some scheduled rains. And perhaps re-lasagna layer bed #1. Bed #2 will have garlic over the winter.
My office poinsettias need to be transplanted into bigger pots, but I'm holding off until I have to move my office. Again, this is part of the ripple of the Gates building construction and our growth. My division now has space off-campus and the second wave of people have already moved there. So some of us are being redistributed through the building and at least the 3 people in my group who are in another building will be moving into my current building. I'm going to miss being on the 2nd (top) floor where there are some levels of security and you need a key to get to it from the elevator. I'll be moving to the A-level, but I'll still have a window. More window space actually so I'm hoping this also means more sun. I'll be closer to my new group. If I can control the bugs, maybe I can bring in my pepper fruit hybrid which doesn't look like this yet
.
No gardening plans for Saturday, we'll be visiting my in-laws for a belated Jana b-day celebration. I do hope to get some done on Sunday after the excursion to Soergel's Orchards. Don't know why I'm still up, but I should definitely wrap her last gift from mom and dad.
