After only 6 days, I was pleasantly surprised to see 3 out of 6 seedlings planted in my new earthbox. The 6 seeds planted were 2 of each kind of cucumber:
Pickling (both sprouted)
Lemon (1 sprouted)
Beit Alpha
My gardening heartbreak for today was Jana decided that her orange Gelly pen needed to be put into one of the PVC pipes that is used for putting water into the earthbox. I carefully removed dirt from both ends and slipped my arm underneath looking for the darn pen. In the process, I scraped skin off my right arm, fun. Fortunately, the cukes are just sprouting so no established roots so it was kind of easy to slid my arm underneath. I'm sure the pen is in there, but I couldn't find it. Maybe I'll try again, but I'll drain the water first and see if the pen rolls anyway. But I'd like my open wounds to heal first before trying again.
At least we found out that the
Gelly pens are non-toxic Michael said, "Ok, so our cukes will be orange-colored." Sigh. Sometimes I can't deal with his jokes.
I finally transplanted 2 jalapeno plants. The Bonnie jalapeno plant I picked up at Lowe's turned out to have 3 plants who's roots were not only root bound, but intertwined. It's like they planted 3 seeds on top of each other and let them grow. I had no choice but to cut and tear roots to get them apart. I hope they all survive. I transplant 1 into a bed, another into a pot and the 3rd, back into it's container but with potting mix.
Saturday, I used up about $6 in gas to visit WalMart. Kinda sucks to figure that out, wish I didn't. Anyway, I picked up supplies to make a 2nd earthbox. I also picked up an 18" window box for $2.23. Not bad really. Jana also got some goodies: plastic shovel and rake, nerf ball, etc. I really wanted either a toy croquet set or hockey set for her. All they had were toy golf sets. Too hard for a 1 yr old I think. Small clubs, small ball.
The window box is a 2nd herb box and the 2nd earthbox will be for salad greens. WalMart didn't have an aquarium basket, I'm just missing that and then I can start putting it together.
I also planted 2 more potato seeds into a 5 gallon bucket. Still nothing sprouting from first potato bucket and it's been a week. Oh, I borrowed a cordless drill from work. Wow. What a difference it makes to use a serious drill. It was effortless to use.
Planted about 1-2 dozen more Dante carrots (the short kind).
Another German neighbor (a computer scientist working at a local university as a visiting researcher) came over to chat gardening. Hmm, I wonder how much German we'll pick up by the end of summer! :)
Oh, I got a bonus on Friday. They were sold out of Edamame Soybeans at High Mowing and Johnny's, but I found 1 lonely packet at Whole Foods on Friday. Yay. I planted 1 seed where some radishes where.
Finally, I am happily stocked with gardening books. I picked up 5 books from my library, 2 books came in from Amazon and another book or 2 coming in soon.
