I also have to remember how I tell people that. :)
I was on a waiting list to get a 20'x20' garden plot with a community garden. Well, this community garden is at a local cemetery. A friend had brought up the topic of gardening to me in passing and I mentioned being on a wait-list for a plot at Homewood Cemetery. Of course, it didn't occur to me until hours later how that sounded. :P
So apparently, the local community garden is located in, or is perhaps part of, a cemetery. Each of their 89 plots is fenced. There are tools we can borrow and compost and mulch are available as part of our registration fee for the year. I imagine the grounds crew use grounds grass clippings and leaves for their compost. Once a week, a volunteer takes excess veggie donations from gardeners to a local soup kitchen. Plots need to be kept or you lose your plot. The waiting list I was on had 30 folks. Wow.
Looks like I alter my garden plans for this year, but this is a good thing! Goodies which Jana ate all of and wanted more from the garden:
- strawberries
- cherry/grape tomatoes
- mini sweet yellow/orange peppers
- snap peas
Other goodies we didn't get enough of:
- stuffing peppers
- beans
- potatoes
- cilantro/herbs
- we had great yields of Amish Paste from one plant, just not enough for canning
- slicing tomatoes
Just right:
- squash/zucchini (1 plant)
- cucumbers (2 plants)
- sweet peppers
- garlic (81 plants)
Enough to give away:
- eggplant (4 plants)
- hot peppers (however I do not want to cut back here)
- squash/zucchini (I can't cut back from 1 plant)
No room to grow:
- corn
- acorn squash
- melon
I'm also excited to cut back on intensive gardening. Sure in my 40 sq ft of garden space I planted: 13 varieties of peppers, 9 varieties of tomatoes, 3 varieties of eggplant, etc. It's darn work. I'm happy to see how much can be grown in so little space. Plus I feel I can cut back on the containers as well.
