Lake Ballard, Dec '08

Jan 15, 2009 22:24

On my last night in Kalgoorlie I took up the opportunity to go out into the desert to see Lake Ballard, a massive salt lake about 2.5 hours out of town.

Scattered across the plain were sculptures by British artist Antony Gormley.

I keep meaning to write about the experience, but every time I try, I can't capture it. Words can't express the immensity and the beauty and the multitude of emotions I experienced out in the red dust.

We were there at sunset, so it was absolutely stunning. Each shadow casting long dark lines across the earth. And later, after champagne and nibblies, I sat down by myself and stared up at the stars.

I remember feeling so excited about future possibilities. After ten long and intense days of socialising and conferencing, the desert night was quiet and still. Sitting under the stars, plastic champagne flute in hand, I was hit by an overwhelming sense of relief and joy.

After the nerves and excitement of submitting my PhD and presenting papers at two conferences, Lake Ballard was the perfect place to find thesis closure.

There were kangaroo tracks everywhere!
