When they said that Ueda Tatsuya is from a rich family, it was not a joke. Aside from being refined and elegant, it was also evident in his taste for food. And ever since he was treated to a first-class dining in one of the episodes of Cartoon KAT-TUN, he somewhat turned into a food connoisseur. All these were not kept a secret what with his bandmates always teasing him about being picky with food.
Ryo, who believes that the best way to man's heart is through his stomach, researched on what dishes Tatsuya liked. He asked Jin who asked Kame and Maru. He learned that Tatsuya prefers French and Italian dishes. He signed up for cooking classes and learned the delicate way of preparing the food that he's sure Tatsuya would love. He plans on giving him a bento then confess. It was the perfect plan according to the Sexy Osaka Man.
Attempt Number 1: Chicken Cordon Bleu
He rolled the chicken breast, ham and cheese carefully making sure that it looks good. He secured it with toothpicks before popping it in the oven. While he was waiting for the Chicken Cordon Bleu to finish cooking in the oven, he started his Lemon-Mushroom Sauce. As he was simmering the sauce, Yamapi, who was hanging out in his apartment, poked his head in the kitchen.
"Ryo-chan, manager-san is on the phone. He wants to talk to you about something," Yamapi said handing him his house phone.
"Thanks. Check on my Cordon Bleu. Remove it from the oven when it's done and let it rest. It's not yet done. I still have to melt the cheese on top of it," Ryo ordered before taking the phone.
Yamapi sat beside him as he hang up the phone. The conversation took a while because they debated whether Ryo would get another drama or not.
"It's good even without the cheese," Yamapi said.
"What is?" Ryo asked.
"Your chicken something," Yamapi replied with a look that says, "Duh!"
"What?!" Ryo rushed to the kitchen to check on his Chicken Cordon Bleu and find only two slices left. "YAMASHITA TOMOHISA! WHY THE HELL DID YOU EAT MY CORDON BLEU?! YOU FUCKING BASTARD!"
Yamapi who was cowering in fear of the angry Ryo said, "I thought it's for our lunch. I would have finished it but thought I better left you two slices."
Yamapi spent the day-off in the hospital.
Attempt Number 2: Stracotto
Ryo is not due to be in Jimusho until later in the afternoon. So he decided to cook lunch for his Tatsuya. He woke up early to make Stracotto, an Italian dish of roast of beef cooked in sauce made of good Chianti wine, tomatoes and vegetable. This is not as simple as beef stew because it has to be cooked in low heat for a long time. At least 3 hours actually.
After a gruelling morning to make sure that his Stracotto is perfect, Ryo is now on his way to the Jimusho, bento on hand. The bento was carefully wrapped in a baby blue cloth and a pair of chopsticks tuck with it. He was in a good mood and even humming to the music blaring on his iPod.
When he walked into the building he saw Okhura sitting on one of the lobby's couches.
"Tacchon! Ohayou!" he greeted his bandmate.
"Ohayou, Ryo-chan!" Tacchon greeted back flashing his beautiful smile.
"I've been meaning to run into you today. Here hold this," Ryo said handing Tacchon the bento. He was rummaging through his bag for something.
"AH! NANI KORE?!" Tacchon exclaimed. Ryo was still wearing his headphones so he only heard "Nani."
"I remembered that I haven't returned the CDs I borrowed last month... I'm sure I put it in my bag this morning before I left home... Where the hell is it?" Ryo said while still bent over his bag looking for the CDs. "Ah! Found it! Here!" He straightened up to give the CDs to Tacchon. Unfortunately, his bandmate is sleeping with an empty bento on his lap.
Attempt Number 3: Coq Au Vin
The following two weeks, Ryo found himself in Osaka with a lot of work. It would be another two weeks before he can return to Tokyo. He's already missing Tatsuya. He's worried that by the time he gets back, someone has captured the heart of his fair princess.
They were currently on a break from recording, so Ryo decided to hang out in their dressing room. As he walk in, he overheard Ryuhei talking on his phone.
"It's okay, Ueda-kun... I know, I know... So, what time tomorrow? ... That's fine... Hahaha... See you!"
"You're talking with Ueda Tatsuya?" Ryo asked.
"I was. There's nothing wrong with that, right?" Ryuhei retorted.
Ryo shook his head. "I just didn't know you were close," he said.
"Not really. He was just calling me as a favor from Yuichi who needs to rush to class. They are coming here tomorrow because Yuichi and I will practice for Shounen Club," Ryuhei explained.
"What time will they be here tomorrow?" Ryo asked.
Ryuhei looked at him like he's grown another head and then he looked worried. "Ryo, if you're planning on teasing or playing a prank on Ueda-kun, don't. Grow old, man."
"I'm not! I just want to know," Ryo said with a pout.
"Fine. They'd be here around lunch time." Ryo didn't say anything after that. He was already thinking of what he would cook for Tatsuya.
The following day, Ryo woke up early to cook. He bought the ingredients on his way home the previous night. He plans on cooking Coq Au Vin, which is one of Tatsuya's favorites. He even bought a bottle of Burgundy wine to cook it with. He sauteed, simmered and baked it carefully checking the time so that it won't overcook.
By lunch time, he was waiting impatiently for Tatsuya to come. He was both nervous and excited. Then he remembered that he left the bottle of Chardonnay in his car that should go with the dish. He laid the bento on his make up table before going out. He was in a hurry that he failed to notice that he placed it on Ryuhei's table which is beside his.
He came back a few minutes later but the bento is nowhere to be found. Tatsuya noticed that he was looking for something and approached to offer his help.
"Looking for something?" Tatsuya asked with a small smile.
"Have you noticed a bento here? It's wrapped in yellow cloth," Ryo said with a blush. His hime looks really pretty when smiling.
"The Coq Au Vin?"
"Eh? How did you know? Did you eat it?" Ryo asked.
Tatsuya laughed. "No, I didn't. Although that's a pity because it's one of my favorites. The room smelled like it when I came in but Yuu and Ryuhei are already eating the last bite. Was that yours?"
"I made it but it's for someone else," Ryo explained.
"That someone sure is lucky. I would give anything to taste your cooking. From what I smelled and by the look on those two's faces, I'm sure it tastes good," Tatsuya said with a sweet smile.
Ryo's heart melted just by seeing it. He almost forgot to breath. "Eh? ...Ah... I'll cook for you when I get back to Tokyo. How's that?"
"I'll take you up on that offer," Tatsuya said with a wink.
'Failed attempt but definitely a good day,' Ryo thought
Attempt Number 4: Japanese Beef Rolls
After a month in Osaka, Ryo entered the Jimusho with a spring in his steps. He would see Tatsuya again and he would surprise him with his homemade bento. He made sure that Tatsuya would be free for lunch. He even double-checked with Jin, whom he bribed to ask KAT-TUN's schedule from Kame.
"Where's everybody?" Ryo asked as soon as he entered.
Massu looked up from the magazine he was reading. "Out to lunch. Tesshi went out to buy our food. By the way, manager-san said to meet him as soon as you get here."
Ryo sighed. 'Guess, it won't take that long.' "Take care of this, okay? I'd be back as soon as the meeting is done," he said placing the bento on the table. He rushed out of the room to see the manager.
The meeting took longer than he expected--30 minutes. He rushed back to the dressing room.
"Massu, where's the bento?" he asked.
"I took care of it," Massu said with a smug look.
"What do you mean you took care of it?" Ryo asked looking doubtful.
"It's best to eat it hot and it looks so good for it to go to waste so I ate it," he replied.
"YOU PIG! I LEFT OSAKA EARLY SO THAT I CAN COOK THAT AND GIVE IT TO--to---TO SOMEONE! AND YOU ATE IT! I SAID TO TAKE CARE OF IT MEANING FOR YOU TO MAKE SURE NO ONE TOUCHES IT! AND YOU ATE IT! ARGH!" Ryo was going ballistics.
The result: No one dares to talk or approach Ryo. Massu made sure they were separated by at least a few floors and someone notifies him if Ryo is anywhere close by.
Attempt Number 5: Angel Hair with Feta and Sun-dried Tomatoes
Ryo is slowly losing hope that he would be able to surprise Tatsuya with a homemade bento without his friends devouring on it before he can even give it. Instead of a surprise, Ryo texted Tatsuya that he would give him a bento the following day. He asked if there's anything he would like to eat. Tatsuya replied that he would like some pasta.
Foregoing the more elaborate and complicated pasta, Ryo opted for a simple yet flavorful dish. It has the perfect combination of feta's saltiness and the chewy sour flavor of sun-dried tomatoes. And to make sure that Tatsuya would be able to enjoy it, he dropped it off in KAT-TUN's dressing room. Tatsuya wasn't there so he sent him a message telling him that the bento is on his make-up table. In return, Tatsuya sent him an email of himself giving a peace sign with a sweet smile. Ryo can't erase the goofy smile on his face the whole morning earning him weird stares from the staffs and his kouhais.
He was surprised when during lunch time that instead of a gushing and happy Tatsuya, a pissed-off one came in NEWS' dressing room. He was dragging Jin by the ear, who was still holding the bento.
"I believe this baka owes you something," Tatsuya said.
Ryo raised an eyebrow. "What did you do? And why are you holding that bento?" Realizing what has happened, he glared at his best friend.
"I was hungry. And it's on Tat-chan's desk. Tat-chan doesn't usually mind if I eat his food," Jin said with a small voice like he was about to cry. He was taller than these two men but an angry Ryo-chan and a furious Tat-chan is a bad combination, Jin realized. He's currently wishing he would disappear just not to feel the wrath of these two.
"Ryo made that for me. I've been looking forward to lunch the whole morning. Only to find out that you have already eaten it," Tatsuya said every word dripping with venom.
"Eh? Are you together now?" Jin asked. Fear completely forgotten; replaced with a curiosity on his best friend's love life.
"No, not yet," Tatsuya asked.
"Eh?!" said both Jin and Ryo.
Tatsuya faced Ryo. "Why do you think I would come with Yuichi in Osaka to meet Ryuhei? And why would I even be bold enough to ask you to cook for me?" Tatsuya "tsked" before walking out not giving Ryo a chance to respond.
When Ryo recovered from the shock, the glare he gave Jin intensified ten-folds. "You fucking lost me a chance to confess and get an answer. He would have been my boyfriend now if you didn't eat that bento," Ryo was speaking calmly but the weight of his words bore down on Jin. It's similar to the feeling of being strangled. He's so scared he almost peed on his pants.
+1: How Ryo Succeeded: Tagliata di Manzo con Rucola
Ryo cornered Tatsuya on the same day before the older man went home. Tatsuya was usually the last to leave their dressing room so Ryo took that opportunity to talk to the older man.
"Tatsuya?"
Tatsuya was startled when Ryo called him. He thought he was the only one left in the building. "Hmm?"
"I thought giving you a bento and then confess would be the perfect way to do things. But I wasted too much time when I could have just approached you and be straight forward," Ryo said. He grabbed Tatsuya's hand and looked him in the eye. "I love you, Ueda Tatsuya. Will you be my boyfriend?"
"Definitely! And I love you too!" Tatsuya replied before kissing him on the lips. A few minutes later, when both of them are short on breath, their lips parted.
"You still promised to cook for me," Tatsuya said with a pout.
"Why don't we go to my place and I'll cook for you tonight?" Ryo suggested.
"Un!" They grabbed their bags and left the building hand in hand. They dropped by the supermarket to buy the ingredients they needed for tonight's dinner before driving off to Ryo's apartment. Although yakiniku is Ryo's specialty, since Tatsuya like Italian, he decided to cook Tagliata for dinner. It was cooked similar to yakiniku but it's served on a bed of arugula salad.
Dinner was a pleasant event of conversations on random topics peppered with kisses and a dash of hugs. Do you still need to know what they had for dessert? Hint: It's sweet, hot and loud. *grins*
