His arms slid around Brendan's body, holding him close, the only sound that could be heard is the other man's hitched breathing, and his own voice whispering nonsensical words in an attempt to offer some sort of comfort. He moved his hands across Brendan's back, rubbing him gently and he kept talking, the sound of his voice muffled by Brendan's hair.
Not for the first time hit by the frustration of having nothing more to offer than this, his presence, and assuring the man that things will be all right, even if he never believed that when it came to him. Because that didn't matter, not right now, now all that mattered was Brendan, making sure that he was OK. Somehow finding the right thing to do to say to achieve that and he knew he would never stop trying. Knew there was nothing he wouldn't do.
The trembling body in his arms finally stilled, yet he continued to run his hands across the man's back, waiting for Brendan to fall asleep again, no matter how long it took. Because lying here, holding the one person that meant more to him than anything or anyone else ever would, was all he needed. He sighed and kissed the top of Brendan's head, things would be all right in time, and at least that they had plenty of: time.
