very scary day

Maggie swallowed one of my mom's pills [Premarin] yesterday morning (it fell out of a section of her pill case that didn't close right, and hit the floor). We all rushed to the animal hospital, and the vet gave her a shot to make her... expel it, shall we say. It didn't work in the amount of time it was supposed to, so he gave her another one (1/3 of the amount in the first shot). I'll spare you the details, and just say it worked that time.

The pill came out almost whole (thank you, God!), apart from the green coating it normally has on it to aid with swallowing. Of all the pills she could have grabbed, this was actually the best -- it takes a while to dissolve because of the coating, and it wasn't like a tranquilizer, pain med, etc. (it's a female hormone replacement Mom takes because she had a hysterectomy in the mid 1980s).

So, the vet gave us this liquid charcoal stuff like they pour down people who overdose (to absorb any of the med that had dissolved). We have to give it to Maggie twice a day -- and surprisingly enough, she doesn't mind. She's not real fond of the tube thing I have to put in the back of her mouth, but then again, who would be? Otherwise, though, she doesn't seem to mind it at all.

She seems to be doing really well now. She was lethargic all day yesterday, most likely from the shots, but by about 11:00pm, she was back to being Maggie.

Man, was that ever a scary day!
