Baby Shower

It was pretty adorable actually. There were these little girls (14 and 10 I think?) that totally adored lucy and me and they wanted to hang with us all night. It was pretty cute!

I convinced her to major in anthropology when it's college time. She'll forget about it but it was awesome to see her eyes light up =)

They want to go on hikes with us so, um, I'll be takin them on hikes. Should be great fun no?

Yeah the party was crazy. Once they started playing games the house got crazy loud and even the grumpy old ladies that didn't say a word during dinner were cracking up and participating. Oh my gosh the tamales? Mmmm! And although I am not a fan of posole, my mum's is absolutely delicious.

I'm so tired though! I went to bed at 3 am ish (I was reading too!) and since it was daylight savings time I woke up super groggy at 12:30pm. I've NEVER woken up that late so I felt horrible! I have a lot of homework to do today too so....it's going to be quite a long day.

I found though that I can't really be around so many women. Especially Latina women. They kept saying things about men and about school and about our culture that got me pretty upset. As always though I try to repress it because what good would it do if I said "Um, men are perfectly capable of cooking for themselves thanks. They're not children you have to mother." And I thought, holy crap if I stood in the middle of the room and declared my atheism? That's when the party would start!

This is why I would rather not go to the parties my parents throw or attend. I don't like forcing myself to be nice and forcing myself to ignore human behavior. Sorry but to me? Being Mexican doesn't mean you have to dress a certain way and be able to use Mexican slang or date a Mexican guy or be a hardcore Catholic or know how to cook everything or have to listen to that horrible shit they play on Spanish radio.

Being Mexican means knowing about your heritage and being proud of it. It means moving forward, working hard to achieve a happiness your parents never got to experience. It means making the most of who you are and contributing to society in the most positive way possible. Being Mexican means being understanding, political, influential, and positive, no matter what obstacles we encounter and no matter the negative and stereotypical people we meet.

All the rest is bullshit.

Maybe it's because I'm blasting Janet Jackson's "Control" at the moment but I felt like I had to rant a bit about that. It really sucks sometimes to be Mexican American. It's like you have to choose one path; you cannot be both. *quote Selena's dad in Selena* "You have to know about Oprah AND Christina!...."

Ugh.

parents, baby shower, rant
