I do not use a grill in the bottom of Kappa's cage and above the tray for two reasons: (1) I like her to have the opportunity to forage among the things she drops (both food and foot toys), and (2) it encourages me to change her papers daily since I don't want her foraging in poop and day-old veggies. Here's a typical scene of my two caiques flying around the house. Daedalus spends some time sitting on the couch looking out the window, while Icarus wants to spend most of his time on me. :P This video shows one of the best behaviors I've taught my caiques: Flying home on cue and pooping there.

I'm curious about how clean people are with their cages and the area around them - and also how our cleaning reality compares to our cleaning ideal. I'd like to know what you think is ideal for how often you should clean/change them, and what you really do. So, a while ago my sister was supposed to send a pionus she adopted from a man to me, but it fell through because the airline she wanted to send him on didn't take birds. While giving Kappa her morning veggies, I saw a part of a zip tie on the floor of her cage - Kappa has chewed the zip ties off of both the breeder doors on the sides of her cage (the "Everyone's Favorite Cage"). I know that if I stick on a couple more zip ties she'll just go at them again. I suspect that with time she'll figure out how to open ( Read more... )
