Happy New Year!

Well, one or two kinds of New Year, anyway. Rosh Hashana starts tonight, so I'm having some friends over for a little feast -- challah, borscht, mandarin orange salad, apples and honey, and a nice honey cake, accompanied by a nice red wine, apple pomegranate cider, vishnik, kirschwasser, vodka, or whatever else people want to drink. I made the honey cake and caramelized the almonds for the salad yesterday, the challah was ready last week and has defrosted, and the rest can be made this afternoon, after I clean house.

I'm also excited because I get to use my new challah cover! Definitely classier than the bandana I would have used otherwise.

The other "new year" event is that (in a stunning display of bad timing) the first day of classes is today. Yes, university president, nice going, starting school with the High Holy Days. This isn't going to screw with the Hebrew and Yiddish language classes, the department of Jewish Studies, or the large number of Jewish students on campus at all. Way to go, college president!

I don't have any classes today, because I have achieved the dream of all grad students, namely a four-day weekend. For me, school starts tomorrow, though I do have to do some course reading today for the two seminars that meet on Wednesday. So I can get the house clean for Rosh Hashana and cook borscht in relative peace.
